    Air - Conditioning Fix

    Hi All

I picked up a 92 RRC and the previous owner removed the air - con pump to access the steering column.

I want to reinstate the air-conditioning and no nothing about it.

I retrieved to pump it's sitting on the bench in the shed and I can refit it.

Understand there's no gas in system, pump is an unknown quantity ....Those of you who know the system I'd appreciate what needs to be done to get the system operating.

It also allows me to approach local air conditioning companies with some idea of what's necessary to be done then approach SWMBO to see if there's any money in the cookie jar for the work

    Cheers

Sorry to say but if you don't know what you are looking at you are at the mercy of the ac mechanic. You would be better of spending your time and asking around for a good ac mechanic who won't try to sell you all new stuff straight up without looking properly at what you have.
At a minimum you will need a new dryer, evac, oil and regas.

    Hi Manofaus

    That's why we're members here

Those that know pass on their knowledge to us that don't ... and you provided some valuable information in your reply

It's a matter of getting my head around what needs to be done .... should be done ...and avoid being lead down the "you need to replace everything path"

If any members in Perth have had their air conditioning systems repaired I'm happy to get a quote from their repairer to get the system working.

    Cheers

All you need is a vacuum pump (gee's there cheap these days)

New 3CFM 1Stage Refrigerant Vacuum Pump Refrigeration Gauges Tools Air Condition | eBay

and a hose and manifold set ...

Refrigeration Air Conditioning AC Diagnostic Manifold Gauge Tool R12 R22 R134A | eBay

bloody hell this stuff is cheap ... 10years ago when I bought this gear is was very expensive, even 2nd hand.

Then grab some Hychill -30 from your local bursons store to charge it up with. When your ready to go you'll get lots of advice from everyone on here.

So your about $150 for the required tools ... Maybe $30 for a small disposable tin of bang gas from Bursons ( I buy the 4.5kg bottles ).... and your away. You can also regass the old pre-R134 classic cars by unscrewing the quick release fittings from the hoses.

I suppose you could go the diy route but if I would you fit a new vac to an old system not knowing what's in it? We're the hoses capped properly? Was the compressor capped properly? Are all the fitting's sound? Condenser? Evaporator? Valves? Dryer not absorb any water?
Should really purge your system too with some nitrogen at least before you diy.
For 300 bucks you should be able to get a pro to do it.
