    Which ZF gearbox for 300Tdi?

    Hiya'll.

As I've said a few times I'm interested in fitting a ZF to my '94 300Tdi Defender Station Wagon. Next year when I return to Oz I'm gonna catchup with DefUte and have a look at his setup

However I saw this interesting post from Reads90:

Where as the 200 TDi auto is lower gearing for the less power of the 200 TDi engine. Put this on to a 300 TDi and the combination is fantasic. But will not lose top end will still push along at 140k plus.
I am just wondering if anyone has any comments on this ? Also if it would be possible in a Defender... as my understanding was the Bell Housing on the 200Tdi ZF auto was different to the Bell Housing on the 300Tdi ZF?

Also would it be possible to "adjust" the governor (or whatever it is) in the 300Tdi ZF to change it such that it performed like the ZF in the 200Tdi :?:

The reason the 200 TDi box goes better on the 300 TDI is because the gearing is differant to the 300 TDi auto gearing. The 200 TDi did not have as much Kw power as the 300 so they had to make the gear work for them to get enough power out of it to make it easy to live with.
This is why when you put the 200 auto on the 300 is goes really well.
As for the tunnel and stuff. My brothers 90 has a Range Rover 4.6 V8 in it with a Auto Borg warner ( with Viscous) box in it. You just remodel the tunnel on the 90/110 . It is easy to do and well wroth it
After all the tunnel is just a bit of bent metal anyway

Dunno what our ADR would have to say about it though  Ah well I'll cross that bridge when I come to it - hopefully sometime next year

    Hi Folks,
Would also be interested in details of the box for the 200tdi (Auto)...as , as i am aware, the auto was NOT available here on the disco until Post Feb 1994 (300 tdi update)....so was this a uk spec only??
I previously owned a 300tdi auto, which my father now owns, and he would be interested in such a gearing change, as it's a real pain to get rolling sometimes.

Reads,....is the gearing different for just 1ST & 2ND in the auto ?? and details of ratios.

thanks, and sorry for the hijack

Ahh we had 200 TDi auto's from day one untill the 300 tDi came along

200 TDi had 107 BHP and the 300 had 111 BHP
So they did have a bit more. But the tore band was better in the 300 TDi

Well that would throw a spanner in the works.

If, and I say if, one was to import a reconditioned 200Tdi ZF gearbox - what would the ADR say? Would I be allowed to fit it to the vehicle with just an Engineering cert.?

Remember I will be based in Qld.

    G'day Reads,

The problem is the insurance companies. They'll use anything they can to wriggle out of a claim :x

As such it would need to be properly certified to stop them from doing so 8O
