    brake problems

    Hi I hoping someone can help me with a problem I am having with my 95 disco. Every now and then while I am driving the bakes come on or bind and the pedal get very hard. As Murphy’s Law would have it every time I have taken my car to the mechanic they can not get it to duplicate the problem. I have looked all over the net for answers and a hopping someone here might be able to help me as it may have happend to other owners

    Hi check that the servo is not cracked around where the brake master bolts on, look carefully!

    No it dosnt have ABS

    <span style="color:blue">if there is no abs......then there is nothing else that can apply the brakes...
    other than your foot......


    the pedal going hard could be the brake booster not holding vaccuum.....


    start by looking at your brake booster....change the hoses and the non return valves first......

    is it a diesel....? with a vaccuum pump....? or a V8...?




    check that your vaccuum hoses arent full of oil......

    let me know what you find and we will go from there....</span>

    What has been said so far is not quite right there are outher things that can apply the brakes I would bet a pound to a pinch salt that the inside of the rubber brake lines on the front are perishing and every now and again there blocking the small holes in the calipers........

    Sounds similar to a problem I had with my old Rangie (1976).

    I am assuming that it occurs after you have applied the brakes, ie they don't release properly and bind. (not that they come on themselves?), but it doesn't happen everytime.

    Does one wheel get hotter than others or does it pull to one side, indicating which brake is the problem.

    I'm thinking that the hose to one caliper (or one pot) has collapsed and when you put your foot on the brake its able to force the brake fluid into the brake but it can't get out, and that brake is hydraulically locked on and releases slowly over time.

    If this is the case it will only get worse. It will also cause problems bleeding the brakes.

    Thanks for your help it comes on all by it self and dosnt release untill the car has been turned off for about 30 minnets

    Interesting as Zook said they should only come on with foot power.
    For my bit of avice , I had a similar problem with the batmobile ( see below,what it is)
    Not that they were coming on by themself they appeared to be on all the time, and braking efficiency was very ordinary,hard pedal, even though it passed a rego check. The calipers are PBR what i found is they slide on pins and the lube had hardened up and they remained locked in place. That was the first part, second i took the calipers off and found the pistons were jammed solid with gunk and dirt, the fluid I tipped out was like mud dark and slimy, used an air hose to blow out thepistons, there was so much crud in each one it was a wonder i had brakes at all. Cleaned it all upput it back together new fluid, a good line and master cylinder bleed and now they are perfect,the calipers slide and there is pedal pressure.
    Having said all that, the caliper pistons could be the culprits full of gunk and dirt preventing them from releasing.

    check the push rod clearance between the booster and the brake pedal
    should be a couple of mm if there is no clearance,this will allow brake pressure to build up,there may be something stopping the booster returning to the nuetral postion there may be a problem with the master cylinder.

    These problems will affect all brakes are they all coming on? or is it just one or two wheels affected,if two wheels affected may be in the master cylinder or a check valve.

    Keep checking and let us now what you find

    detriot locker,lsd front,C.D.L kit,chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift,rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.
