SupporterOk so Im having a bit of a cooling system issue at the moment with my tdi 110. It seems to be developing excessive pressure, not stupid levels but enough to be straining the system (have replaced most hose clamps about 1 month ago when it first started. Now it has started weeping slowly from the block drain bolt. It will sometimes run fine (90-93 aprox) then other days will be running 97-99 aprox. When we passed through Perth had it checked at rovertec as I was concerned that it may be head gasket. They gave it the all clear for the head gasket but I think they may have just used sniffer/tester, im not too sure but I think I remember hearing that they can miss small exhaust leaks into cooling system.
Also if I open the expansion tank in the morning it is still holding pressure after not running overnight...
Im obviously not good at diagnostics so my questions are
Could this be caused by water pump failure? Is there a way to check water pump in situ?
How about thermostat?
Its an aftermarket Chinese alloy radiator that has been good so far (except since I put it in it bizarrely consistently heats up by about 5 deg when I put the headlights on..... I have no idea what may be the link there but my best guess is somehow electrics interfering with the reading rather than the engine heating up but have not checked with an external thermometer.)
What is the best way to check exhaust pressurisation of cooling system? I remember hearing about compressed air down each cylinder from injector hole but unsure
Any others I may be missing?
It has been doing this for a few months now so would head gasket be getting progressively worse?
We are currently in Broome and heading up into the Kimberly and arnhem land before heading back home to SE QLD for July so would like to get my head around this one prior to heading out bush again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

If it still has pressure in the morning I would be looking at a head gasket ASAP. A fire ring is likely as not leaking under full pressure into the cooling system. And yes, it slowly deteriorates as time goes on as the fire ring is stressed every day.

SupporterThank you very much Bee Utey, bugger that's not what I want to hear though, the saying "if you suspect a head gasket it usually is" kept creeping into my mind. It's not heaps of pressure in the morning though just a small pft of air. Dam I hope it's not as I'm not looking forward to attempting that on the roadside or at camp 😢

SupporterToo true Mario! The fishing up there would be a great procrastination though. Ill get onto it tomorrow then, bugger was planning to head off to cape Levique tomorrow but I suppose the delay is better than the alternative of trying to post a new head up there.
AT RESTHave you got total car road side assist, seriously might be a good time to consider buying it as extra insurance could save your bacon

SupporterI do have the total care cover from RACQ though when I called them out for something up in cairns they weren't much help but could supply a tilt tray if needed. Oh they may cover accommodation though which would be a nice luxury.
AT REST, , but you are in bush mechanics territory, angle grinder and number 7 fencing wire, you just don't need anything else.
you might need to buy a straight edge though, to make sure it's level
