I get a little hiss when I crack the cap on the cold motor.
I assume it is vacuum rather than pressure.
Maybe give the hoses a little squeeze when cold to see if they are firm.

A bad earth will make the temp needle move with the lights on.
There is the earthing point in the engine bay basically in front of the instrument cluster. Unbolt the connection and give a scrub, see if it fixes the issue.

I still cannot believe you have made it that far with only minor issues.

    Cheers,

The other 2% made it home.

Cost difference between Britpart and Genuine seals: £2.04. Knowing that your brakes won't fail at any moment: Priceless.

    Awesome thanks Tony!
That light issues has had me scratching my head for ages. I'll check the hoses tomorrow morning. I'll replace the thermostat and expansion cap and hope that solves it. I also brushed out a few truckloads of bugs from the radiator this morning.

As for the issues so far I just avoided a major incident as I stopped in Perth to get a mechanic to look it over (as you know my diagnostics are crap but I can sometimes figure out which end of the screwdriver to use if I know there is an issue to fix) and the tierod had stripped it's threads (both sides!!) and and the tierod ends absolutely shot :-(
The a frame balljoint was also nonexistent as well as radius arm bushes. That lightened the already lightened wallet but much better than the alternative medical bills or funeral costs of total steering failure.
Still nursing the transfer by topping it up every few days.
Odometer is 396000, getting close to the big four 0, so barely run in for a tdi eh

Update. After blowing the bugs out and new thermostat it seems a little better but haven't had a big day on the hwy yet ( held up through a 3 hours of soft sand driving today though). Fingers crossed.
It also seems that the pressure in the morning is like tony suggested a vacuum rather than actual pressure but yet to have a full solid day of hwy so will check after that again.

    Update
Well after trying everything I could think of was about to order a new head but turned out to be that little bugger of a thing that splitter between the thromostat return and rad to the expansion tank clogged with crud at thermostat hose side. Much cheaper to just blast that out with the hose 👍
