They use a tester that is basically bouncing a ball bearing on the surface. The harder the material the higher it bounces. Probably has a proper name but I'm not sure what it is.

SupporterHow is an aluminium alloy cylinder head accurately tested for softness without making it useless ?

SupporterThanks , i`ll see what the net can tell me about rebound or ball rebound but i guess they still mark the surface .
I read of head surfaces been tested but never a mention of where the bolts mate .
Seems the destructive types are accurate but not much help if you still what to use the piece .
Its a small ball bearing, generally if you are having a head tested you will get it skimmed after is passes or bin if it doesn't.
When i had my tdi head done last year you couldn't see or feel where the tester was used.
