I've got a leaky problem

I've seen sooooo many posts (and acerbic comments from other places) about Land Rovers and leaks.

My Disco 1 V8 doesn't leak.

I replaced the bottom rad hose and that solved the water leak. The power steering used to leak but I used a tried and true technique to solve that problem: Ignore it. And after a few months it stopped leaking.

I don't have other leaks, and I keep all the fluid levels at their recommended levels.

What's wrong, or is the LR leak a myth? Does your LR leak? I find this subject fascinating and a bit concerning...

Mine never leaked, but I've developed a small one recently. As for the myths, well I suspect it is just that, THey leak as much as any vehicle does.

Mine doesn't leak, it's just a lubrication inicator

My BA Falcoon has a leaky rear diff 8O 8O 8O

But it's too damn close to the ground for me to look under and see it, not that it matters anyway it's a company car :roll:

I beleive they leak fron the factory due to ( lack of) quality control, as soon as enthusiasts like us get them we fix all the leaks !

there were certain leaks we used to fix on pre-delivery.....
they werent actually dripping but over time would have wet the under carriage
with that dust collecting film of oil......

imagine having a brand new $140,000 lse range rover and finding oil leaks on the garage floor.... 8O

they actually just see the dollar signs disguised as warranty work....

I'm know on my second land Rover and neither of them has leaked with out a reason.

The first ( 85 Rangie) leaked from the rear diff (mainly because part of the diff gears exited through the housing) and the second ( 97 Disco ) was found to be leaking after a service but it helps if you do up the oil filter.

I did have a couple of Toyota's (85 4runner, 77 FJ55 Cruiser and 73 FJ40) and all of these imatated the Exon Valdes.

The 110's in the ARMY would leak via the rear main, (3.9 Isuzu) but that was never more than a few drips on the ground at one time.

I am aware of the stories though, nothing leaks like an English car, even the wiring leaks. It lets out smoke.

BUT I do beleive that this has been fixed over the years and now they are as good as the rest (but the rep lives on)

I also knew a guy that worked for Land Rover in the late 70's to mid 80's and he claimed that he knew of several LR gearboxs that came here with no gaskets fitted at all. Don't know how ture this is but it adds to the bad rep.
