Djam, that shop I will not name that told you not to bother with the preload hasn't impressed me so far - and I only got as far as trying to get some email answers from them. I don't know why they told you that.
You have to check the preloads on these things, regardless. I just rebuilt a brand-new crate engine that had been sitting for a long time, so I pulled it apart. It still needed checking when it went back together with factory original heads, block, rocker pedestals, you name it. I used spendy adjustable pushrods, which were a neat way to do it.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
