Rick, the oem t/stat that came in the 2.8 was 88c and it was identical to the one my LR mechanic had on his shelf as an oem part for a tdi. I wonder if the is a difference depending on which region the engine is ment for(regarding oem)
Dunno Serg as I was positive the original one I took out was an 88* one, but the one I have here has 78 stamped in it.
I used to be able to see the t/stat crack on the VDO mechanical thermometer with that t/stat and it was right at 88* :confused:
I have just bought a new one, it's marked 88 deg.
The old one cracks at 88 deg on the gauge, most of the time, but occasionally it stays shut:mad:
The Defender has had more thermostats than all the other cars I've owned put together.

Quick follow up, the '78' on one of my old t/stats was a batch/production number, not a temp opening :angel:
All the ones I possess open at 88*C.
My low running temp was caused by a faulty oil cooler t/stat, (supposed to open @ 74*)
It had stuck wide open and so the engine coolant couldn't get to full operating temp just running around.
Shows just how much heat is moved by the engine oil.

Hi Tony.
I've had the oil t/stat out before and made a little wire basket up so I could suspend it in a pot, placed a thermocouple in there and turned the stove on to see what temp the pushrod started to move.
This time I just removed the water t/stat first and it was closed, so removed the oil one and the pushrod was fully extended, so pretty simple to see which one was the culprit.

ok just found my stash of T/stats....first two are OEM 300tdi and OEM 2.8 tgv: both are branded "WAXSTAT" and both have 88 in a circle stamped into the top of the bottom flange. (this is 88c opening temp)
my 2 Tridon type are models: TT388-180, this I only have the packet for and is the same # that Rick mentioned earlier in the thread...like him, when I went to auto supplier they (tridon) had to completely different T/stats listed for the Def 300tdi and the Disco 300tdi????? TT388-180 should be just a standard 88c replacement type for the 300tdi. I went through the catalouge and found a phsyically similar type with a lower cracking temp. It is part number TT265-180, the lower/bottom ring is a touch smaller in OD than the 2 OEM I have but It still does the job. It has 71c stamped up inside the copper tube.
