    300Tdi aftermarket t/stat warning....

I've just found something that can have tragic consequences to your engines health.
In the Tridon ('03), Stant ('00) and Dayco ('04) cooling catalogues, the wrong thermostat is listed for the 300Tdi !
They all list one that is 54mm OD (the correct one is 52mm), with a by-pass shut-off valve height of 35mm (OE= 40mm) and a valve diameter of 27.5mm (OE 33mm) They also list a conventional, not rubber type gasket.
The consequences of this are that the by-pass valve probably won't close the by-pass off !

Interesting that Tridon make a small selection of high volume t/stats that use a 34mm valve vs most OE's of 29mm. Shame they don't make one to suit a 300Tdi or Td5.

    Very interesting 8O

Does that mean we should only be buying "original"?

looks like Tridon do make a correct t/stat, it's just that they list it as a Discovery TD5 t/stat ! (Tridon pt # TT388-180). Dimensionally, it's identical to an ERR 3291 Land Rover part. The T/stat listed as 'Discovery Tdi 1992-99' is just wrong. (maybe it's actually the 200Tdi t/stat ??) The Defender 1992-on (4 & 5 cylinder !) is listed as a conventional (non by-pass) type, which doesn't suit any of these engines. It just looks like Dayco and Stant have merely cross referenced from the Tridon catalogue, much like oil filter manufacturers often do with the Ryco catalogue, and they get it wrong too.

Thanks for the heads up Rick.

If we do need to change thermostats then what would be your recommendation - go with an original landie supplied part to be on the safe side?

    Hi,

Talking of these thermostats, does anyone know what is the opening temperature for - ERR 3291?

A specification I found on the net claims it is 88degC but the sales guy at Graeme Cooper says it is 78degC.

What temperatures do people here use?

Rick, back when I was sorting the 2.8 I went through the tridon catalogue. They had 2 completely different t/stats listed for the def 300tdi and the disco 300tdi. The def was correct but the disco a single action type. I contacted tridon and let them know. Their response was that they get their info from LR and that's that. I did find another identical 300tdi type in the catalogue that cracks at a lower temp. This is what I run.

I came across the same problem when I replaced the thermostat in my 300tdi and came to the same conclusion that the td5 listing was correct. Could have sworn I posted on this forum at the time but that was a couple of years ago.

Funnily, I got the same result when I tried to tell them or their error.
