    Remote & Key Replacement

    Hi All,

    I need to replace the central lock/alarm remote & the ignition key in my '95 Disco TDI.

    Questions without notice are:

    [list]Can I buy a non genuine remote?
    If so how do I get the car to recognise the new remote?

    Can I buy a non genuine key?
    Has the key got a micro chip in the head?
    If so how do I get the system to recognise it?[list]

    Normally you just drive in to dealer and give them your first born and a vital organ ;-)

    95 Disco....I assume you have an ES model as these were the only ones to have a factory remote.

    I think you'll have to get a genuine remote as they're a rolling code type but the key doesn't have a chip in it so a non-genuine will be OK.

    The good news is that a working 2nd hand remote can be easily coded to your car. It has to be the single button type though, not the 96MY double button type.

    It's the double button type - I can get them on eBay for US$20.

    Wonder how much the dealer will sting me for programming.

    Does anyone know hoe the programming is done. Does it need a factory "tool" to access the ECU or is it just a sequence of events.

    The double button type first appeared on the 96MY Disco (TA). They're still in use now on the current Freelander.

    Just make sure the eBay ones are the right frequency for your car. I'm sure most were 315MHz but some later ones might be 433MHz.

    I'm not too sure what's involved in programming the double button type, but if the guys here can do it, it can't be that hard :wink: .

    when we took the battery out of our remote to change it you have to re sinc the remote with the car

    it was realy easy it tels you how to do it in your handbook
    i'm assming its exactly the same if you buy a remote to programe it as thats what we intend to do so we have a spare.......

    we also got a car key cut cost $6..........just a plain olod metal car ey but if you want a key like the orginal there is a guy selling the landrover key uncut on ebay but he is in the states

    If it is the same 2 key remote as used on the Freelanders they are about $190 at the stealer - second hand from TR spares $45. Don't buy on ebay UK as they will all be the wrong frequency. A genuine key will be required - there is not a chip as such but there is something in them that demobilses the car in some certain circumstances when it is near the receiver.

    If you get another 2 key remote you will need to take it, your car and your genuine key to a landrover dealer to be put on the diagnostic machine for the whole lot to be recoded - 30mins and $60 and you are on your way. I have not found anyone but a dealer who has the equipment to do this. Please tell me I am wrong so I can get it done cheaper as I refuse to pay the stealer $120 an hour to do this.

    If you don't have the 2 button remote as fitted to the freelander and later models Disco 1s - then ignore all the above.

    Hi guys
    my dad is going thru the same thing with his '97 disco
    new remote buttons are about $180 8O
    it's cheaper to put a non genuine remote door locking system with an alarm for about $200 - $300 fitted :wink:

    it is just a sequence of events.....
    and with lurch......he wont start if the remote is not near the ignition switch.....
    not the key itself.......
    the keys just cost a heap because people pay that much...they are worth
    only a few dollars like any other key......

    look on the discoweb site i think you will find the procedure......
    it is available on one of the other land rover sites....but i cant remember.....</span>

    On my 98 Disco Tdi, I have a 2 button remote. The key is totally independent and I got spares cut from any locksmith. If you use the remote to lock the car, it is an engine imobiliser and also it activates the motions sensors inside the car (above the passenger B pillar from memory). All of this gets 'unlocked' if you use the remote, but if you want to only use the key, you must unlock the car from the drivers door to disarm it all.

    When only using the key to lock and unlock the car (from drivers door), it immobilises the engine, but it does not activate the internal motion sensors. (So you can leave windows open, for example).

    But I can't answer your question about genuine/non genuine key fobs. I'd love to know, because mine is now intermitently not working. I hope it's the key fob and not inside the cars 'receiver'.

    Alarms

    If your remote is about to die, you can get a replacement from somewhere other than the dealers- who probably don't have spares anyway. A company in the UK ( www.alarmremotes.co.uk ) sells replacements for 50 pounds.

    The blank for the MY95 ( MA...) Disco is actually a volvo key.. VO73

    This is apparantly the routine to synch up a new remote.

    Answer Hi Langy,

    here it is :

    Must be completed within 8 seconds from start. A two-person job and have remote key fobs available.

    Open hood and have volunteer hold hood alarm switch down.

    Inside Disco, with all doors closed, make sure ignition switch is off and all door lock buttons up.

    Turn ignition switch on (setting II) then off.

    Assistant now releases the hood switch.

    Turn the ignition switch (position II) on then off.

    IF DONE RIGHT, HORN WILL SOUND ONCE AND DASH LED WILL LIGHT UP. This indicates the "Learn Mode" portion of the security system is activated. IF THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN, START ALL OVER AGAIN.

    IF in the "Learn Mode", push and hold the first remote button on the key fob. The dash LED should flash 8 cycles a second for one second - indicates code accepted. IF NO FLASHING - START OVER.

    With the 2nd key fob, push and hold the button until the flash is seen. AGAIN, if no flash is seen, start over. IF you have only one key fob, press the button for a second time. THIS SEQUENCE requires two key fobs.

    Once performed, the system should be armed and ready.

    IF at any time you turn the ignition on, it will cancel the whole process.
