Running hot

Ok guys. I've recently replaced the water pump on my 3.9 V8.
Since doing so she's been running hot, gets to the point of coolant bubbling away in the system and at times pressurising enough to come out the expansion tank cap.
I've flushed the cooling system and this didn't help.
My thoughts are that the timing is out a little causing the overheating. There are no other signs of this however and therefore I'm not really sure.
When I removed the old water pump I had a lot of trouble getting the viscious fan off. It involved some cutting and banging, could I have damaged the fan causing it to cut in too late and making the engine run too hot?
The gauge doesn't get over half way, it just seems to be a little too warm.

Thanks.
Sean

So did a compression on all cylinders as Rave manual says this would be the way to check if blown head gasket was causing too much compression in cooling system. As I was doing this I noticed that even though the engine was only warm (i.e. not too hot to touch pretty much any part of it) I could hear pressure escaping the expansion tank cap, coulc a faulty seal in the cap be causing the symptoms I'm getting :?: :?:

In case anyone was interested most cylinders are at 150psi with a couple at 140psi, engine has done 210 000km. Is this normal :?:

Hi Sean
A mechanic with a "sniffer" or colour change kit to detect exhaust gasses in the coolant will give the answer.

I try to steer clear of the bills mechanics tend to give you.
If I can't work it out though I'll be heading for my local LR man.
I'm fortunate actually there's two here that I reckon I can trust, one's been working on LRs for years and the other did his apprenticeship on landies.
That said I'd prefer to solve the problem myself.
DZ had some good ideas.
I'm looking into those.

Sean,

I was thinking replacement of the expansion tank cap.

What did Tony suggest or is it SWB?

Tony suggested the system may need bleeding, can't seem to locate the plug in the valley though. :? Or possibly head gasket.
I'm leaning toward the cap at the moment after spending some time with my head under the bonnet.
When I was moving down here the expansion tank split and crapped itself. When I replaced it I didn't get a new cap with it.

FWIW when one of those plastic radiator plugs failed on on my Tdi they replaced the expansion tank cap as well because it might have been cooked in the process.

hey...im home now....
how did you go...?

is it losing any water....?
another way to check is to pressurise the cooling system (or drive it till its up to
normal temp) and then remove the sparkplugs......by the time you get the plugs out
if there was a problem with the gasket it would have pushed the coolant into the
cylinders.....put a spark plug in the end of the coil lead(to control loose sparks)
then have someone crank the engine while you watch to see if water squirts out through the plug holes.....

yours may not have the bleeder in the valley.....it might be on the thermostat housing....
i will see if i can find out.....

As far as I could tell there is only one way to put the fan on. The same way it came off the old one.
The fan is working.
The belt isn't loose.
I put some tape on the cap threads, took her for a drive this morning with no problems. My first step will definately be to change the cap.
