    Hi Clarkie
    You were very lucky.
Normally any hit on a torqued up tailshaft results in it twisting around itself.I once saw a prop shaft in 4WD monthly(I think) made from square tube,Agricultural I thought, but perhaps it is actually stronger in section????I wonder if it would be a tad hard to balance???

I got mine from Fred Smith in Wantirna. It (genuine part) was much cheaper than getting one made up, even with the shipping. Can't remember the price, but it was two or three years ago.

Landyandy - Square tube is commonly used in agricultural drive shafts, using a square drive rather than a spline for the sliding bit. Actual balancing of a square shaft should be no different from balancing a round one, but making it close to balanced will be a lot more difficult than making a round one, as it is a lot easier to make a round boss accurately than a square one - simply turn it on a lathe.
And a square tube will be weaker than a round one of the same overall diameter and mass, although one of the same wall thickness and the same distance A/F will be slightly stronger, but heavier. And a square one will catch on obstructions much more readily.

No, excessive wear on the spline - after all, it had done 300,000km.
Quote to replace the spline was a lot more than a new shaft.

Pays to shop around - I'm sure my new one was around the aftermarket price you quote and the rebuild was over $600 - but there is only one company can do that locally, and remember I was after a new spline joint not a new tube. Also, this was a few years ago. Did you call Fred Smith?
