Got a quote from a very reputable (both for being good and being expensive) land rover place the other day for doing some performance upgrades to my 300Tdi. I was just enquiring, just wanted to see if any garages were still doing this stuff to old engines like this.
He said he really wouldn't want to do anything more than the fuel pump tweak and a proper tune, anything else is pushing an old engine like that too much, sounded like sound advice.
Said a fuel pump tweak would run about $1000, then a dyno tune around $500, thought that should be a good amount of improvement for any of those and relatively safe. Sounded kinda expensive but okay, probably takes some time.
Then he said that if when they push more pressure into the pump if stuff starts leaking then it could need to be rebuilt and they don't warranty that part with the tweak because lots of those pumps are old etc. Fair enough...but then he said that a rebuild on a pump could be around $4000 !!!! Is he just talking about an injector pump here? Isn't a new one a lot less than that...like a LOT less???
Can anyone tell me if I'm missing something here, I'm no mechanic so I probably am...but to me this maybe sounded like someone who just didn't want to do this job haha would that be closer to the mark perhaps?

$4000 for a full VE pump rebuild is pretty damned high, but it depends on what they need to replace in it.
Most VE pump rebuilds stretch to around $2500.
I know someone that was stung $5000 for a pump rebuild, timing belt, etc. recently though.
Supposedly the pump was stuffed internally according to the diesel service.
The strange thing was that the car drove really well, fuel economy was excellent, power very good (for a Tdi)

If the vehicle is still running the factory exhaust, Id start with that. Then the fuel. But be careful, IMO the TDi is under cooled, both engine and intercooler.
AT RESTAngus,they are talking the injector pump. But consider in all reality, its a Bloody 300TDI and it will never be a Ferrari!

Provided you follow the instructions, and sneak up on the tune, you shouldn't have any problems. If the IP does start leaking, it was probably going to sooner or later, anyway.
