    2 notch or 3 notch

    Hello,

Just removed a 2 notch head gasket from my td5.

What is the consensus on replacing a 2 notch hg with a 3 notch hg?

Replace the 2 hole gasket with the same , from memory the 2 hole is 1.20 mm , and is the thinnest ,the 3hole is 1.35 mm and if I remember correctly the 1 hole is 1.27 mm , you really need to measure piston height to determine , but if there is no evidence of the valves hitting pistons then the 2 hole is the one you should use , go for genuine or elring

Agree with discorevy. Why would you, unless you need the greater thickness?

Check if Mario will post you one there....

I've read varying opinions re which head gasket to use for replacement; also a little confused re the overall opinion/ verdict re metal dowels in the vin number range of my disco, apparently not recommended.

I will use the same gasket specs as the one removed.

Depends whether you've had the head skimmed or not, I'd reckon. No skim, same type of gasket. If the head is skimmed, you need to know how much by, to select the right gasket.

Td5 , along with nearly all diesels , determine the gasket thickness by the piston height donh , as the chamber is in the piston as opposed to petrols that have the chamber in the head, if you take off that much material for it to make a difference on a td5 you can throw the head away.

Use the metal dowels , just measure to make sure they have a mm or so clearance lengthwise when the head is back on , in other words , measure top of block to bottom of dowel hole , face of head after skim to bottom of dowel hole plus gasket thickness 1.2 mm , make sure the dowels are 1 mm or so shorter
