    300 tdi rocker shaft breakage

    Hi guys
has anyone had this happen to them ?
this is the second time for me !
first time was not long after purchase of disco, had it in for service to adjust valve clearance, LR dealer covered cost of that one was on #1 cyl valves.
this time #4 cyl valves both times have stripped pedestal stud out of the head & broken the rocker shaft
wasn't very happy but luckily no bent valves or pushrods
especially since i'm leaving for Alice Springs tomorrow

I would be checking the valve timing. Whilst the 300tdi does not have lot of valve overlap at TDC, neither is there a lot of piston clearance.
If it is that the timing is out (say one tooth on the belt) and the piston is hitting a valve, it will be stressing the rocker shaft studs but will still allow good compression and not reflect on the tappet clearance either. (overlap TDC, end of exhaust stroke)
I have read of this occurring (UK forum) but also never read of the true cause.

Suttons in Alice Springs have a good reputation as being pretty switched on, it might pay to go and have a talk with the service manager or workshop foreman.

I agree with sheff that it sounds like the cam timing is out a tooth. The only other remote possibility is that the stud has been either cross-threaded on instal, or the head is soft, as the followers are a roller type, and these generally run some pretty high valve spring pressures to keep them on the lobe. I have no idea what the valve spring specs are for the Landy.

Usually of one has broken chances are the others will be weak. Have seen this problem with a Pajero. Obtained a parts quote for a friend after a 1000km recovery, but he went with the parts from his brother. I fitted the top end but would not do the timing as I knew it had to be spot on and had little experience with diesel timinng. He rushed out and got a mining diesel fitter to time it. I was not happy and said I wanted nothing to do with it as it did not look right to me. On start up it broke again. On further investigation I found the Pajero had 5 timing marks that needed to be alligned. Only the top 2 were. On top of this the parts bought were actually second hand (cleaned up to look like new) and on futher investigation with dye and blcak light found signs of previous metal fatigue. It was a shame as I had lined up brand new parts for the same price.
I would say get decent parts and have it timed correctly, does not take much of an error with the timing on diesels to do damage.
