LED brake light issues

So, I like the idea of LEDs because they're generally brighter than the normal, supposedly last longer and place less stress on the switching devices.
I know the indicator flasher system on the RRC relies on load (something LEDs won't provide), so I haven't done anything to replace them. I have replaced the front running lights and reverse lights, as well as the cabin light.
However, I'm having real issues replacing the BAY15D brake/running lights with LEDs. Nothing seems to work... If I gently just insert the LED lights (not twisting them), and just turn on the running lights, the LED comes on fine. However if I twisting/secure them, it doesn't work.
I can't figure out what the issue might be... Has anyone been successful in replace the dual filament bulbs with LED equivalents?
