    Intermittent Starting

    Hi All,

Having trouble starting my 300TDi Discovery (233000Kms) after about half an hour from last running the engine.
Fuel supply is ok, and glow plugs are relatively new. Battery is one week old and injector pump is rebuilt at 214,000Kms.Injectors are about 40,000kms run in.

If I let the timing to the glow plugs run for 3 consecutive periods then the beast will start. I'm thinkng of re wiring the cabling to the glow plugs to see if this improves the situation.

Other problem I have is that the engine sometimes does not shut off when the ignition is switched off. The stop solenoid is about 1000kms old.
Has anyone had any of the above problems??

Any advice would be welcome, thank you.

Sounds more like an ignition problem or high tension wire problem. Check all the connections are clean and not broken / worn.

    Hi DiscoUser,

How long has this been going on (you appear to have been whittling away at the fuel system for a while)?

I'm sure that it won't be the glow plug system as the engine will still be warm after half an hour and glow plugs really are only for cold starts on cold days.

It sounds like fuel starvation to begin with and an excess of fuel (engine run on) to finish.

If it was mine I would be off to a diesel engine specialist (like Berrima Diesel) for a complete check.

Hope the brains trust here can help.

I'd be starting at the wiring associated with the stop solenoid.
