Disco II v8 Airflow meter problem

 Gday All,
Need some advice, over the weekend i took a drive to the watagans where i took the car through some water, it splashed up into the engine bay and for some reason one of the clips on my airfilter cover was missing. Muddy water got into the filtered side of my airbox and into the Airflow meter. Anyway afterwards my car decided to pack it in and is currently not running. I will be taking up the problem of the missing clips with alto newcastle as there the only people who have been playing under there but i need to get the car running. Looking into the AFM i can see alot of specks of muddy stuff, can i clean this out with something? WD40??? i really need to get the car running so i can atleast get it home or to alto.

Thanks,

Mick.

A friend of mine has just gone through the same thing. He took the airflow meter assembly out (although the clips were still there for him) and squirted WD40 in there (I, myself, would never do that. I'm not sure what's involved with this particular AFM, but plenty of Bosch ones in the past that I've worked with have an extremely delicate hot wire across the air path that is incredibly fragile) followed by a non-CFC electronic contacts cleaner. He put it all back..and... no workie!

It ended up being that a couple of the plug contacts had pushed back into their socket channels when the two sides were pushed together again. Watch out for that - it happens quite often apparently.

After it had been towed to the dealer and they had found the problem, it worked just fine again. $BigBucksForTheDiagnosis :?

Not sure if the D2 hotwire is different to the D1 and RR hotwires but I have a 5AM hotwire that ive sprayed with contact cleaner and [b]still works okYou will need to take it out as this will allow the mud to come out rather then pushing it futher in the motor.
How much went past the AFM into the punmatic chamber???? Whouldnt start it if any went that far!! best to tow it home

all the best hope your on the road soon

If you happy that there was not much and willing to start it, spray in reverse flow this will push the mud back out the way it came and not futher into the AFM.
Hold it up so that all the spray will drain out paying attention to spray into the small holes, as this is where the hotwire and censers are. And while your sprying the AFM, spray the wire connection as well.
better to spray more than required then not enough.

good luck

Spray it with non residue cleaner , such as electronic cleaner from Jaycar.
If there is mud directly on the sensing wires you may have to soften it with water and detergent first and brush it with a soft brush.
I think you have a heating cycle on shutdown on your MAF which may have baked the mud on the wires .

A tech in USA described how he cleaned a 5AM with a soft toothbrush.

I found my 5AM cleaned up well with just no residue cleaner but it was fouled with oil from a K&N.
If you only had some muddy water spattered it is most likely just a mechanical problem, mud on the sensor wires rather than a sensor electronic problem.
