    Defender Td5 air intake

    The ducting between the air intake and the air cleaner box on my Td5 Defender looks quite convoluted and restrictive to me. It is around 3” at either end and less than two in the middle. I spent a fair bit of time searching on the internet if someone has come up with a better solution, but couldn’t find anything. So, my question to the experts is, is it worth looking at a tidier piping, especially for heavily mapped vehicles, or is in not worth the effort?

    Always worth the effort IMO.

    I did this on a Tdi using 80mm hose between the snorkel and air cleaner as it stepped down to 2" in the middle at the dump valve, which IIRC looks similar to the TD5.

    Did it make a difference ?

    Hand on heart I can't say I felt it, but I also made a 3" exhaust and turned the fuel up too, so it had to help.

    An engine is just an air pump, if you can't get air in you can't get air out.

    Yeah, I thought it might not make a difference as no one has come up with a better solution. Unfortunately, I looked at it after I sealed everything properly and don't want to pull it apart to see if it makes a difference.
    I am surprised that tuners like Allisport or BAS don't like snorkels with their sage 1 or 2 tunes as I think the don't worsen the airflow much.

    Not sure how you arrive at that... BAS spent a lot of dyno time and proved that the snorkel has a marked impact on the performance.

    As for somebody coming up with a solution to the intake... Nugget Stuff...

    The big problem with the Defender snorkel is that it necks down to below 50mm ID where it goes through the guard and home the factory hose, as well as being restrictive in volume for the remainder.

    Have a look at more modern vehicles like a V8 Cruiser, the size and volume is much larger than what Safari used in the past
