    A professionally installed plug should be permanent IMO.

    I worked for years following power lines in the bush. Used to get stakes fairly often while traversing scrub tracks. Only ever replaced tyres as a set when they were bald.

    If the tyre damage is terminal, the shop won't plug it.

    I think the OP was referring to "rope" type plugs that come in kits from ALDI among others.

    There is no doubt that mushroom plugs are permanent for the life of the tyre.

    Just remembering another instance, I would ride my Hornet 900 across the Harbour Bridge every day. All the nails and screws used to be thrown into the centre of the lane where I would pick them up with usually the rear tyre. I remember I ended up with 4 in one tyre before it was worn out.
