can you id this double cardan unit

    Hi

I was wondering if anyone can identify this double cardan unit in my Td5 Defender. It has an access hole to the central grease nipple and it doesn’t look like any of the aftermarket ones, I’ve seen on the web. Also, it looks like the TC output flange was re-drilled to accommodate this unit.

    Thanks
    Joachim

It was most likely made for a D2 as the mating flange is different which is why yours was re drilled to suit instead of swapping the flange over.

DOES THE DOUBLE Cardon joint appear to dwarf your other universal at the other end of your shaft?

By your description of the access hole in the centre It might be a 1350 double Cardon joint off a ford f series?

APT Make these. I have just had one fitted to my D2 .

    cheers Chris

The only issue I ever had with a Tom Wood shaft is access to the centreing bearing when trying to grease it.
On the Deefer I'd either remove the joint or take the floor out as the angle defeated me.

That one pictured looks like it has an access hole? (if the centreing bearing is greasable?)

Yes, thats an access hole for the grease nipple in the centre. It is really handy to be able to grease it without having to take the whole tailshaft out. Also, it’s a standard grease nipple.

    Noice!

Tom's ones use a recessed nipple that you need to use a needle point on but the killer is the angle when installed is a PITA.

Looks like it's from a Toyota Hilux. I need to properly measure it on the weekend.

I totally forgot that Hardy Spicer make HD DC shafts using a Japanese (Toyota) DC coupling.

Yes, I just stumbled across my Toyota DCs listed in the Hardy Spicer catalogue this week. Apparently, they are good for a 35 deg operating angle. Spoke to Hardy Spicer and all rebuild parts are available. I suspect that it is a complete Toyota driveshaft with a Defender flange at the diff end. It seems to be reasonably strong as I have a stage1 Td5 tune, 35” wheels and crawler gears on a 2.9t truck.
