Baz.
New injector harness fitted and now running sweet. The injector harness is the updated version and was exactly the same as the one that came out. So the updated ones are as likely to pass oil as the old type. The problem seems to be in the o rings on the harness connector. The old one should be able to be cleaned up, new o rings put in place and used as a spare. There was also a lot of oil in the connectors on top of the injectors themselves. Also replaced the clutch master cylinder, LR wanted $250, Britparts in Perth $55. Huge difference for exactly the same item and no LR do not use genuine LR or Lockheed parts as I have had one changed under warranty.
TD5 accoustic covers top and back removed from motor.
TD5 Rocker cover removed. Rubber gasket can be reused if not damaged. I still smear master gasket, non setting before re-installing.
Injector harness connector to engine harness. This is one point of oil ingress. The oil travels along the wires to the connector, if the o ring seals are worn will leak into the connector. The bottom connector is a female reciever, so oil will pool in connector and find its way into the wiring itself and down into the ecu harness causing problems.
Injector harness connector, full of oil
Oil in the injector harness connector on top of the injector.
A lot of oil was built up in here.
Old injector wiring harness, top.
New injector wiring harness, bottom.
Both identical and are the new and supposedlly improved type. Shows the updated version will still fail.
New injector wiring harness fitted.

Not to mention the dollars in labour we saved. Would have cost another $5-600 in labour, for what is an easy job, except the crazy set up on the Fender to get the clutch master cylinder out.

Who was the bright spark that came up with that idea of putting wiring inside the rocker/cam area 8O
Being the first time Ive seen the top end of a TD5 I certainly like the chain driven cam especially being a 300TDi owner

I asked myself the same question. While it keeps it from outside damage, it creates the oil ingress issue. Could be solve by shrink wrapping the whole wiring loom and reversing the connector plugs so the female are on top, with asmall drain hole either side at the connector lower plug.

Is this the same harness that causes problems with oil in the ECU? (can't see how it connets up to underneath the drivers seat, so I'm guessing there is another harness which mucks up the ECU).
Also - How much did the new harness cost?
Cheers
David
David,
Yes it is what causes oil in the ecu. The injector harness connects to the engine harness, connector is just under the head (drivers side) and is a round barrel type connector. What happens is the oil runs along the wires, the orings perrish on the top connector, oil runs through and into the connector. As the bottom connector is a femaale plug, the oil pools inside the connector cup, into the femal plugs and down the inside of the wiring (engine harness) to the ecu connector under the seat. Usually does not get into the ecu as they are well sealed. Makes a damn mess. The upside is it can be cleaned. I kept spraying CRC 2-26 into the female plugs until it came out clear in the ecu connector and then cleaned up. When the car is started the heat generated in the injector wiring helps the oil to run through the wiring.
I reckon I can salvage the old harness as it is the updated one that alledgedly does not do this.![]()
I will clean it up, replace the o rings and keep it as a spare. Maybe even shrink wrap the the exposed wiring with heat shrink and silastic or seal the top of the connector.
The harness was around $107 from Karcraft. $120 delivered I think.
