Hi Mick, you need to find a loom with the following coloured wire in it.

Try looking behind one of the blinker/stop light assembly's

    Red/Orange = Park lights

    Green/Purple = Stop Lights

    Green/Brown = Reverse Lights

    Red/Yellow = Fog Lights ( if fitted )

    Green/White = Right Turn Lights

    Green/Red = Left Turn Lights

Next, although LEDs are polarised, they can be wired in reverse and SHOULD NOT be harmed, so you can simply connect the wires on your led units and see which sections light up when given wires are connected in what manner.

    DRIVERS SIDE

    Red/Yellow = Fog Lights

    Green/White = Right Turn Lights

    Black = ??????

    PASSENGER SIDE

    Red/Yellow = Fog Lights

    Green/Red = Left Turn Lights.

    Black = ?????

Got the above wires Tim coming out of the D2 loom to the bumper lights, the reverse, parking, brake etc are on the upper pillar cluster and are fine the way they are. It's only the fog and indicators I need to wire in but as there is no obvious corresponding colour off the LED lights I don't know which of the red, brown, white or yellow connects to either the red/yellow, green/white(red) or black.

Really appreciate your help Tim, but i'm affraid i'm still no clearer as I have no idea which wire connects to which. Loathed to start connecting wires up before I know what each one does. Sorry for the frustrating questions, but I really have no idea about car electrics or even the basics.

Hi Mick, the Black wire on the disco loom is your Ground, Earth or negative, what ever you want to call it.

As for the LED unit wires, if you can’t get a wiring diagram from whoever you bought them from you are going to have to find out what each wire does yourself.

It’s easy to do, you will only need a note pad and pen.

Go to the disco’s battery and connect one of the LEDs wires to the negative terminal and then test each of the other three wires, one at a time and see if any of the LEDs come on. If the LEDs light up, note what colour wire was connected to what terminal.

If nothing happened when you tested, change the wire that you have on the battery negative and try the others again.

Keep doing this until you get all the LEDs working and don’t forget to note what LED coloured wire was connected to which battery terminal when the LEDs worked.

    LED Tail lamps

Colours on the LED lamps I put on my boat trailer were standard trailer colours, That is
    white - earth/chassis
    red-brake
    brown-tail light
    yellow - indicator

you can test the LED tail=lights on your battery, they are diodes so you cant hurt them if you connect in reverse. just try with only any two wires at any one time. If they are the same as mine, then white to the negative terminal, and each of the others in turn on the positive should give a result.
don't drop the voltage to the lights with series resistors, as they wont be as bright.
You should be able to add load with resistors in parallel, but I would try it first to see what the effect on the flash rate is.
Using LEDs on my trailer, because the current is so low, the trailer indicator dosen't work.

all right, now for the big question.

Why are you changing to LEDs.

They still have a long way to go before they are of equal brightness to standard globes but are there some other reasons for using them.

    Cheers

Chaning because it's 75mm box section my bar is made out of so little room for bigger lights plus these are a completed sealed unit, totally waterproof and pretty flush......you know how I like playing in water Also, I went with these as the chap making my bar suggested them and they seemed like a good idea. I am also considering mounting another set of indicators at the top of the rear pillars above the brake light cluster, but this will mean drilling into the car body and I can't find a light design that will suit....any suggestions. A light mounted up high will be great for towing my trailer also.
Getting Rick to wire in my lights next Monday when it goes in for it's major service and if I can get some others for up top too i'll get him to fit them at the same time.
Also need to mount some more spots on the bull bar to replace the ones already there and was thinking about mounting the existing lights onto my ARB roof rack, again any tips. I can use most of the esisting loom and change some of the connectors to water proof ones but wouldn't know how to get the roof ones mounted and how to join them into the extisting circuit and wiring.
Thirdly, looking at fitting a new MP3 head unit and wouldn't know where to start so wondering if anyone knows where best take my beloved beast to get all this electric work done properly.
Tim, any issues with current draw adding more spots and indicator lights etc? Should I be upgrading looms and relays etc........as if I know what a relay is anyway ops:

Ideally I would like to hand it all over to someone who knows what they are doing and get them to correctly fit all the kit........don't know where to go though.

Appreciate your help and tab, thanks for the input too.

Hi Mick, as far as the wiring goes, there is no reason why you can’t do it yourself or we could perhaps organise a workshop day for GCLRO club and do a few at a time. Would save you a bucket load of money too.

    Just a thought.

I had some extra indicator lights fitted to a Hilux I had many years ago. It had a canopy fitted to it so I made up some simple brackets and fixed the new lights to the inside of the rear hatch.

You could easily do something similar to the rear door of the disco and as the lights are inside, they won’t get dirty, and you don’t have holes everywhere.

    Again, just a thought.

    Cheers.
