    Changing Gears - problem

    Hello,

Hope somebody can give me a hint. I am driving a 2001 Defender TD5 with 85,000km and the following is happening.

Sometimes I have difficulties to change from the 1st into neutral or from reverse into neutral. It seems that the clutch is somehow not releasing the gears.

Is the clutch the problem or the gearbox?

    Cheers,
    Daniel

Almost certainly the clutch. Probably the clutch operating hydraulics - first check would be the fluid level. Could be either the master or slave cylinder. Not a major job.
It could also be the release fork, which is somewhat more of a major job.

i have accidentally resolved my problem. Only took one year.
Reverse to neutral used to stick badly. Solution was to keep the gear lever towards me when going to the "cross over" positon. Hope that made sense.
Think of neutral as the centre of a cross, Reverse is to the right along the horizontal, then back on the vertical.

Trouble I had was trying to cut the corner. I have had no more problems.
First is the same, hold it away from you, pull back on the vertical line to the horizontal line, then it can come across.

I think it is the design of the gating system.
I also run synthetic gearbox oil.

Yeeeeessss.... The fork can be a bit of an @ss but also a common weak point. The mechanism has a habit of punching a hole through the middle of the fork!

Obviously, check the easy things first:

    1 - Hydraulic fluid levels.
2 - Condition of gearbox oil.
3 - Is there a fir tree on the drain plug? (The drain plug is magnetic, if there's been a lot of wear in the 'box then the 'tree' will be quite large. It's common for there to be some though....)

If all of those check out OK then you may well have problems with the selector fork.

    Have fun....

Check what gearbox oil they are using? Has it always been serviced by a LR dealer?

There was some confusion over what oil to use in the R380 (MTF or ATF) which I think has been responsible for some poor performances. Whatever the case, get LRA to have it well sorted before the warranty comes up.

OK, I think I found the issue.

There was not enough fluid. (stupid me)

But I also discovered that the fluid is somehow leaking along the clutch pedal inside the landy.

Before I start dismantling the whole stuff - has anybody a clue where I should look next?

    Cheers,
    Daniel

It sounds like the dreaded TD5 Defender clutch master cylinder issue.

A search here will reveal some of the knowledge.

    Mine did this at 20,000kms...

    Solution...

Landrover removed the cylinder and had it sleeved.
Guys there told me its common and just replacing it with a new one will mean the problem can re-occur.

Instead they sleeved the original and its ran like a dream ever since.

    Cheers
    Mike
