check the breather...
My disco tdi auto has about 113000 on the clock and recently develped a pinion seal leak on the rear diff. Took it to ford (local Landy dealer as of a few months ago), who eventually replaced the seal (had to order it in FFS!). Next day it is leaking worse than before. Took it back, various hmmms, and apologies and it is booked in again this week. I have since heard that these diffs can wear prematurely and I am wondering if I might be up for more than a seal? What have other disco 1 people found with diffs?? Could be an excuse for a locker I suppose-to look on the bright side.

210 000km and not a drop of oil coming out of it.
And before you smart alecs get going yes there is oil in it.
We quite often find the flange has a groove worn in it and needs refurbishing. We try to keep repaired ones in stock to supply on a changeover basis. If there is a bad groove the new seal will leak. As noted above, if the breather is blocked it will cause leaks as well.

Mine has done over 190000km and not a drop, and yes mine is the same is Disco95's, it has oil in it.
My advice is do it yourself, chances are they put it in the wrong way round or something, who knows. If they dont get it right this time. Ask to inspect the part when they take it out, as mentioned above it might be worn meaning no amount of sealing will keep the oil in.
And as Inc said check the breather for a blockage if pressure is builing up as the oil gets hot it will try and escape out of the easiest possible path. Matt

Update..
took it back to get it repaired properly. When I picked it up I was told the first seal had been incorrectly installed and that everything is now fine. A couple of hunred kilometres later what do I find? 2 things; a thick gob of black grease oozing at the base of the pinion seal area, and a very finger loose (almost off the thread) nut on one of the donut bolts! The untightened nut is unforgivable and the grease (which is clearly NOT diff oil) has me confused? I checked the breather line which did have a bit of krap at the diff end but not enought to block it i think. Would this grease be something they packed around the seal? Any ideas? I'll ring them again tomorrow--suffice to say I will not use them again in the future and will provide them with some pointed feedback.
cheers
