What happened with my '86 RR was that the end plate in the angle drive at the back of the speedo had come out allowing the bevel gears to move out of mesh. I cleaned it up and epoxied the plate back in place. That fixed it.

Another common problem has been the odometer reaching a milestone, i.e., a multiple of 100,000km and the 100,000km wheel doesn't turn. I had this as well. I disassembled the speedo and the odometer to find it was bound up with dried up grease (if I recall correctly).

When I test drove my Rangie prior to purchase 9 months ago it had 200 009km on the clock. It still has the same figure, although the speedo does work. One day I will pull the cluster to pieces to investigate the fault, maybe when I have finished doing the fun modifications.

agree sounds like the angle drive.

I had similar problems, was told to centre punch the 2 discs to tighten up the workings - problem fixed

I have a document about repairing Jaeger and Smiths speedos I just downloaded from the 'Net. I want to calibrate the County speedo.
