Defender dual battery - what will fit

    Hi all,

Is it possible to fit two standard size defender batteries in the battery compartment?

Or what is the workable size so that i dont need to move the earth wire?

    Defender td5 2003

    Thanks

If the battery box is the same as my old County, two N70 will fit. This was done by the PO - an ex-OTC colleague. (My pics.)

Note that the battery compartment on the '84 V8 County had no LR fitted goodies so it had plenty of room. Does your Defender have any factory fitted bits which could preclude fitting 2 batteries?

Sounds a bit like a former user has added some wiring ?

Hi J, why not consider DIY using (for example) a traxide DBS, and use the $s saved to purchase some useful tools to do the job ?

    Traxide DBS 300Tdi

    Hi all

Thought I would bring this thread back as I am considering installing a Traxide as suggested as an option earlier in this thread and have been considering doing this myself also. I have trawled through this site and there are dozens of threads on this topic which just adds to the confusion.

My concerns are a few, yes will a second battery fit and the answer is yes though there are some electrics that I would need to move and also three lighting relays that I will remove.

    I am not at all confident with electrical works and really don’t want to destroy my project. My requirements are quite simple/basic (I think). In addition to the second battery I also want to be able to;

    • support solar input (solar panels are already regulated)
    • support an inverter for low current device charging.

What are peoples thoughts on what would be the basic system that will support this configuration (SC80x)? I have had a look at the Traxide site and the more I read the more I get confused. Not looking for anything fancy, just the basics.

I also consider a battery isolation switch as a must have, which will kill all power from both batteries. My idea here is to have a dash mounted toggle type switch connected via a solenoid that will then mechanically disconnect the batteries.. is this really an option or am I being optimistic (bearing in mind my wishes to keep this basic). I have previously had marine isolating switches installed in other Defenders which enable selection of one, two or no batteries by turning the rotary dial.

I would be grateful of any guidance.

    Cheers - Simon

Hi Simon, I’ll answer you e-mail questions here as I answer these questions.

First off, all my kits are set up as DIY friendly, because I find people who fit their own kits tend to do a much better job than most auto elecs do.

Next, the kit installations are carried out like a plumbing job and no electrical experience is needed and only basic tools are needed.

If you have the slightest handyman skills, then you will have no problems fitting any of my Land Rover specific kits, and most of the kits are Plug-N-Play type installations.

BUT, should you have anything arise that you are not sure of, I am just a phone call away.

Solar panels must have a solar regulator as you have stated yours are, and then they can be connected anywhere in the system and all batteries will be charged.

Not sure why you want the switch?

You can use up to a 300w inverter, which should cover all your recharge needs, and you can order specific setup modifications and I will make the kit up to suit.

One point, at this time, I am flat out and you need to allow at least 2 weeks for delivery.
