Converting my 110 County wagon to a soft top

The plan for my next project is to ditch the rear wagon frame and replace the rear tub with one from a 2 door 110, fit some hoops and convert it to a soft top.

Some answers to the following questions and any other helpful comments would be much appreciated.

Will a ute tub from a 2 door 110 fit? (I think the series 3 wagon chassis and 2 dcor chassis are slightly different in that the the wagon chassis did not have all the supports for the ute tub, not sure about the 110's)

Is a ute tub from a 110 going to be hard to find?

Are the wagon bits I remove worth anything? (roof, doors x3, rear frame, seats etc)

Wheres the best place to get the hoops and other fittings like windscreen frame strips to suit a 110 and bits over the doors etc?

Are there any other issues I should be aware of before I start pulling it to pieces?

    Thanks

Ute tub will fit, you may have to add some brackets but I don't think so - goes the other way I think.

Ute tub could be hard to find - there have never been very many sold here, nearly all 110s have been wagons or cab/chassis except army ones, and these are almost all still in the army. It may be easier to sell your wagon and buy a hardtop and convert this.

Wagon bits should be saleable if they are in good shape, doors in particular. Need to specify the door type when selling - push button or lift handles.

One of the recent threads under introductions gives pointers to getting soft top & hoops etc.

Depending where you live you may have legal problems, and i would check with your local authority before starting.

Interestingly, in 1998 I ran into someone in Tasmania somewhere - can't remember just where - who was driving a 110 that had been converted as you are planning by a previous owner - and then converted back again by him, using the same parts.

    Thanks JDNSW.

I rang my local authority today, (QLD transport) and there will be some issues but not insurmountable.

The other issue I will face is locating the top seatbelt mount. I will have to install a roll bar and mount the top belt bolt to that. I think this is going to be the most difficult part.

When I last priced a tub (and it was the tub from a wrecked hardtop not a ute) it was approx $1,000.

This is why I have a $50 series tub sitting in my yard, annoying the missus.

Your idea is intriguing. Are you going to be converting it to a 2 door ? If so, are you keeping the rear seats ?

If so, you'll need to consider belt mounting points for those too.

If not, then I would seriously question the benefits of converting a wagon (unless you have some pretty serious hardware fitted like maxidrive lockers and such).

    Keep us posted.

Can do it to the 5 door 110 like here.

This where i got our soft top on the 90 done
They will sell you the sticks and frame as well. The front biot on the windscreen is the most expensive bit.

And btw Queensland transport did not blat an eyelid when they passed my 90 for import. The did not mention once that it was a soft top. I was worried they might be a bit funny about cages and stuff but the said nothing and it passed all the checks.

Buy GreyLandy's 110 two-door (or is that three door?) Defender hardtop for $6000 and swap what you need over.

At the end you'll still have two cars, one of which you can still sell.
