Stamp duty payable when buying a vehicle that is currently club and will be club reg.

A question for my fellow Victorians

I may be buying a car that is currently on Club Permit reg
I know that the reg is not transferable and I will have to do my own club reg

The question is , would I have to pay Stamp Duty on the transfer, if it is going to be Club Reg in my name

I guess basically , I am buying an unreg vehicle

I'm not sure the registration type is relevant at all.

The duty is payable on the purchase of the vehicle not on its transfer or registration from my understanding... they simply collect it at the time of registration transfer.

I didn't pay on any of mine, but.......

Each had been owned by me for some time and I'd never competed transfer paperwork (neither had the seller), just took the Club Permit paperwork down and got them 'registered'.

Maybe, strictly speaking, they don't belong to me....

As mentioned, yes you will, but will be bugger all. It needs to be paid on the 'market value' of the vehicle - which can be the lowest number you can find in Redbook for your make and model. Transfer duty is $8.40 per $200 value or part thereof. Tell them it's worth the absolute minimum you can get away with.

The answer from 2 people within Vicroads is no

The current owner will cancel their Club Permit registration and therefore I am buying an unregistered vehicle

No stamp payable if buying an unregistered vehicle

I don't have to fill out a transfer of ownership because of that

I need a permit if I want to drive that vehicle home and back to Vicroads

When I go to Club Permit register it, I have to take all the Club Permit paperwork and a RWC

All I pay is the Reg and plate fee

No Stamp duty on a Club Permit vehicle

    Phone a 3rd & 4th person & get different answers.
Often best to email because then you get a response 'in writing'.

I haven't paid on 4 of mine and wondered when this thread started if I should have filled out transfer forms. I think it's possible to pay registration on a vehicle owned by someone else so when you go on Club Permit do they change the 'registered owner' on their system ?

There is a charge for transfer and then Stamp Duty is separate so whether you should still pay the transfer fee and that way VicRoads have you down as the registered owner.

Bear in mind that insurance companies can access what value you put on it. They will happily accept premiums on -say- a $10,000 valuation- but see what happens when you make a total loss claim for it if you paid transfer fee on $5k...

Not without a subpoena I don't think, Vicroads records are not accessible to the general public without one and the courts would need a good reason for this, but I'll stand corrected from any legal eagles here.
