    Brake power

Ive got a Disco2, and the brakes are ok when there are good parts in there

    But

quite a while ago I had one of Bruce Davis' Range Rovers and when I merely touched the brakes it near sent me through the windscreen.

There are some differences in the vehicles such as weight, but does anybody know why the difference in braking performance?

The rotors are the same critical specs
The calipers are 2&1 pot sliders on the Disco2 and 4 & 2 pot fixed on the Rangie. I'm not sure how much difference this makes, but the fixed Brembos on my Audi will also send me through the windscreen.
    Vacuum booster perhaps?
    Cheers

    Hi Simon,

Could be the booster, maybe the m/c but if you're still running 285/75's I'd reckon the big tyres are having more of an influence than anything.

The stock size is only 235/70-16 or 255/60-18, tiny in diameter in comparison.

I fitted a full set of after market slotted rotors and pads to my D2a and these will nearly send you through the windscreen, Far Far better than stock rotors and pads.
I think they were DMA or MDA gear i can't remember off hand.

The tyres probably do play a big part in it.

These Rangie brakes however had some serious bite.

    Let me guess............

D1 pedal box with the twin (double? Has 2 membranes inside) vacuum booster and matching MC.

    Braided brakelines, like Goodridge.

County (Def?) front calipers (with 46mm pistons as opposed to 43, thanks Dougal )

Slotted rotors and nice pads like EBC or my fav Mintex.

I'm a bit scared to see what the new brakes I've yet to put on mine will be like.
It's all been sitting here for a couple of months now, but real work keeps getting in the way, and a few fiddly arse things on the Disco needed sorting.

Slotted rotors, Goodridge hoses, new fluid and custom QFM pads with a high Mu/high bite compound developed for GTR's.
The TC and ABS should work really well. Brake power

The pads will be total overkill for the stock tyres but they're down to 4mm tread depth so 265/70's (or 265/60-18's) will be going on it in the next couple of months.

That sounds similar to what I have now. Dba slotted rotors and EBC Yellow stuff pads which I imported from the UK.

    I must be brake greedy!

That just sent me on a massive google search and read!
I'll have to find out mor about the D1 vacuum booster, but the 46mm piston calipers are really interesting and I assume they work better with the D1 master cylinder. It would be interesting to know if the 46mm calipers bolt in to the D2 axle which is a bit different. I didn't see for the County, but my County chassis here has solid front rotors, but with the big caliers being in the Defender 110/130, it will be interesting to find out which ones (or if all) have the vented rotors.... thats if the calipers will come across. Same with the rear brakes, except the D2 also has solid rear rotors.

I had never heard of QFM, they look better than anything I've used so far looking at the specs! Which pad are you using? That 4WD Xtreme sportz looks awesome to me!

Dougal is no longer a member on here, but he had a 1990 ish RRC with a 4BDIT in it and did all the tech stuff on that and a stack of related turbo stuff, all of which still should be accessible on this site.

He also came up with the idea of the Def calipers and all that should still be on here too. This would be 8 to 10 years ago.

At the time I looked at Paddocks website and you could get the 46mm ones for solid or vented fronts.

He's still somewhat active on Pirate 4x4 in the Rover section.

Dougal also had an interesting way (simple) of dealing with the F/R proportioning valve.

    cheers, DL
