What do you guys think about this?

    true or not?

not true! they are there and they do work. but yes they get blocked
    with exhaust carbon.
the egr is the main reason for td5's hunting at idle.
its basically just a pollution device. in the near future im taking mine out
and blocking off the pipe from the exhaust.

from all reports on the uk sites, they give all positives results when removed. eg claimed more mid range torque.

Should be easy enough to electrically disconnect for a test, or pull off the vacuum pipe and block it off.
    Notes from the book:

The EGR modulator is located on the RH side inner front wing.
It regulates the vacuum source to the EGR valve allowing it to open or close.
The ECM utilises the EGR modulator to control the amount of exhaust gas being recirculated in order to reduce exhaust emissions and combustion noise.
Optimum EGR is usually obtained when the vehicle is operating at light throttle openings, and the vehicle is cruising at approximately 2000 to 3000 rev/min.

    Input / Output

The EGR modulator (C0191-1) receives a feed from the main relay (C0063-87) on a brown/orange wire via header 294.
The earth path for the modulator (C0191-2) is controlled by the ECM (C0158-3) on a blue wire. The length of time the ECM supplies an earth is how long the exhaust gases are allowed to recirculate.
The ECM decides how long to supply the earth by looking at engine temperature and engine load.

The EGR modulator can fail in one or more of the following ways:
    • Solenoid open circuit.
    • Short circuit to vehicle supply.
    • Short circuit to earth.
In the event of an EGR modulator failure, the EGR system will become inoperative.

to my thinking, stopping/blocking anything that increases soot levels has to be a good thing.
EGR in part has fueled the incredible improvement in diesel oils in the last few years. With all that extra soot going into the combustion chamber, a certain % finds its way past the rings and valve stem seals and into the oil. The oil companies and certifying bodies have really raised their game to handle the extra contaminents. At least it has been offset to some degree with low sulphur fuel, but if it isn't going into the system in the first place, it can only help.

    Hi

Have removed EGR valve etc last week on my 2001 td5 disco annd i can say that it runs smoother and idles much smoother am presently checking fuel consumption and it is looking slightly improved. Main thing to do when doing this mod is to send to UK for a brake vacuum hose with no tee peice in it. These were fitted to "rest of world landrovers" I could not source one in Aus. Cheers

I removed my EGR and noticed that the engine ran cooler. The power benefit could be explained, 1- the full amount of exhaust gas are now powering the turbo as opposed to some being diverted into the inlet. 2- the engine is no longer having hot and oxygen depleted air being pumped back into the inlet.

As for the T piece for the vacuum line, go to super cheap and get a 4mm cap for vacuum hose

what I did with mine was to block off the inlet of the EGR valve with a core plug (frost plug) remove the valve fom the housing and grind the protrusions in the housing down to remove any restrictions and block the vacuum diaphram nozzle with solder so from the outside everything looks standard and unmodified
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

    Ducatust88,

Would you mind providing the part number and where you got the vacume line. And confirm it was for a defender.

    Thanks

I simply unplugged the modulators' electrical connectors - both EGR and ILT on my MY03. The biggest improvement was fast throttle response when cruising using light throttle in undulating terrain. I later provided full 12V to the ILT modulator (via a switch and also via a control module) to close the throttle valve as an anti-theft, anti-runaway and lost oil pressure no-power device (no air, no run).

Can you post up some more details on this please? Tutorial perhaps?

    Thanks
    David
