As I indicated I just use a big shifter - these are big plugs and as they only keep oil in they do not need high torque so as long as they have not been overtightened then a shifter is fine.
I guess yours have been overtightened and you are having trouble getting them out - then definitely do not used a shifter but they only need to be just a little more than hand tight to stay in place.

Just checked one and 3/4" AF wasn't a tight fit but would do the job. Whether they changed the hex size at some point I don't know.

That one has been seriously butchered. 3/4" is the correct size - just buy a new one.
