Kept digging and found it. RH side of the block low and slightly towards the rear (a couple of inches above the sump flange and six inches from the rear face of block). Shiny patch in the pic attached.

Going in for rego this arvo and thought I'd help out the friendly folk at VicRoads by being able to direct them towards where the engine serial number is.... but I have no idea. Not the one on the rocker cover (that's now in the boot, so not much use). The one on the block (presumably). I understand it's hard to locate and see? Anyone?
3.6 TDV8 in L320 RRS if that makes any difference.
Thank you.

Hey mate,
Im going through the same drama right now in SA with a 2008 L322 RR TDV8 3.6 Ive purchased in Victoria and am trying to transfer rego to SA plates. The inspectors in SA wont let me transfer rego unless they sight or have photos of the exact plate you are talking about. They couldn't find it themselves so Im trying to get photos of it and have a small snake camera that Im feeding up from underneath the car to try and see the plat but its extremely hard to see it even with the camera! Wondering how you managed to actually see it when you did it? Any tips or pointers you might be able to give me would be amazing!
Took my sons D2 Td5 for rego a couple of years ago.
I pointed to where the engine number was and said good luck.
She decided to to rely on the RWC certificate, which has the number written by the tester
Dave.
I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
