are the pads ok? some pads squeal to let you know they need to be changed
Hi All
2001 Auto Discovery, 109,000 klm's and just starting to get brake squeal at low speeds just before the car only comes to a halt more so when the wheels are turned like turning into someone's driveway. Always serviced by dealer so I believe only geniune parts would be used.
Could any one tell me if they have the same and what are the cures?

Pads should be fine I get about 40,000 out of a set of pads and they were done at 80,000 which included discs at the same time. Thanks for the suggestion.
Mine did this for ages. THey have now stoped again. There was discussion on here about shims to stop the squeel and some kind of sticky stuff to keep the pads on the pistons. I just ignored mine as I felt it would help keep the idiots away from me.
I have just done all my pads and rotors replaced with EBC ones the last time the brakes were done it was by the dealer I found one caliper had siezed there was no lube on the guide pins this caused excessive wear on the pads.
The rear brakes were squealing the pads had about 3mm left on them the other 3 calipers had lube on the guide pins.

My front left wheel had a squeal once because the wheel bearing was a little loose. I noticed the squeal when the passenger window was down and there was no other noticeable symptoms.
When I was replacing the brakefluid, while the wheels were off, I grabbed the discs and gave each one a wriggle (to check them all). The only one that had sideways movement was the front left (the noisy one). Tightened the wheel bearing hub nut a tiny bit and all was fixed. It was not very loose, but enough to produce a little squeal (and the squeal was definitly the brakes, not the bearing).
Now, this may not be what your problem is!
As an aside, a slightly loose wheel bearing nut can also make your brake pedal a little spongy on the first application - coz the wobbly hub will push the pads back a little (if you know what I mean), so pressing the brakes will push the pads back onto the disc, but the pedal will travel down a little further than usual.
In my case, after replacing brake fluid (and bleeding) and tightening that one hub, my brakes felt much firmer.
