Winch & Transfer rebuild - Seals question
Like everyone since buying my 1st D2 3 or so years ago I’ve been doing mostly all my own repairs and maintenance. I’ve never used seals before tho. I know it’s a basic thing but I’ve never done it. The engineering side of my brain works really quite well and currently I’m rebuilding a Thompson 8000 Hand Crank Electric winch which is destined for the front of my D2. Afterwards I’m going to rebuild the ‘spare’ CDL transfer case that I bought cheap.
Which brings me to my question. Should I use the supplied gaskets or silicon gasket maker? The winch isn’t exactly such a precision instrument that it’s using the gaskets as spacers. Also, the transfer rebuild kit contains a bunch of gaskets but in the rebuild section of the Ashcrofts site they suggest silicon gasket maker.
Thoughts? Also, I assume if I use gaskets that I smear both sides with stag paste? Again, never used gaskets before but I’m learning.
