When you change the panhard bushes, it pays to also get new bolts too.

As John said check the rear suspension bushes, particularly the rear trailing arm to axle bushes.

    vague

Have you had a wheel alignment, couldn't see it mentioned in post.
If the vagueness started when new tyres were fitted, they could be the cause.
Go to a flat empty space like a parking lot, and let the car idle forward slowly, with your hands off the wheel. If the steering wheel moves side to side, then the belts in the front tyres are not aligned properly. Try swapping side to side, or front to back.
Regarding tyres losing pressure; if you can, remove wheels from vehicle and take them back to where you bought them. Get them to remove tyres, and then you can check that bead areas are clean and unpitted. Then put tyres back on using that rubbery bead sealer they have.

    cheers

Have just had car in for a pre expedition ( september) once over.
The bushes on the rear of the front leading arms were buggered
And one rear WB had play.
This has the car steering significantly better.
    Panhard bushes apparently ok.
New tyres soon so will get them on and see how she feels.

I have seen a few (including my 88 RR) where the pitman arm comes loose from the steering box. Well worth a check.

I once looked at a RRC and the steering was unbelievably vague.
I crawlwd underneath and the Pitman Arm nut was less than finger tight, as the PO or whoever had bent the lock washer in the same direction for both sides.
I had a big socket in my car, so did it up and bent the lock washer correctly.
I shuddered to think what would have happened if the splines lost contact.
I didn't buy the car as it had lots of rust in the back.

I remember reading years ago that when an rrc feels floaty and vague , first step is to nip up all the suspension and steering bolts/nuts before anything else.
Same is true for a D1.
