Clutch slip at high rev - stable

    Hi all,

Got an interesting one where it seems I'm getting a bit of clutch slip. This only happens somewhere between medium and high revolutions, constant and acceleration. As an example, I was driving down the the gong and was heading up a medium long hill, the defender td5 can climb it easily at 70km/h in 5th gear. Half way through the hill for a second or so the revs seem to go up, yet no effect or pull on the car and then it then settles down. Sure does feel like something is turning faster and nothing is happening, I was thinking it could be the clutch. But to only slip on high revs... My mechanic has done a load and it seems to be fine.

I've heard about some switch on the clutch line that could be the prolem...

    Any advice?

    Thanks

If you have a look on the clutch master you will see a switch and plug, disconnect the plug and see what it does.
A faulty switch normally shows up as low idle surge, or holding revs between gears.

Thanks mate I’ll give it a go on the weekend. Would it perhaps have anything to do with the popping sound when I press and release the clutch?

the popping is usually a sticking throw out bearing or fork pivot/SC issue.

if the engine revs go up and then slide back down with no increase in speed then its the clutch slipping.

only 2 types of causes at the end of the day and if its not a slave cylinder sticking then the rest of them are box or engine out jobs

    Thanks,

How would i determine if its the engine, box or slave cylinder. The first two sounds very expensive...?

    Clutch slippage on a Defender.
The first place I would be looking is the clutch m/c adjustment.
Very common for incorrect pushrod setup to cause slippage.

This if from someone outside of the forum and inline with the prev comment

Sometimes on the td5 defender, the pedal is set too tight and the release valve on the master cylinder does not vent the fluid back in to the reservior. With the engine heating up stuff around it, the fluid cannot expand freely as it is blocked by the master cyl and causes the clutch to apply slightly, trashing the clutch plate, flywheel and thrust bearing.... 1st - new clutch master ASAP

    Cheers
