    Defender handbrake modification.

Just used this forum to get the information and photo's for replacing the handbrake with a late model Range Rover one.
The job took about 2 hours with my 4 year old assistant. (probably 1.5 without his "help"). Works great, and is a vast improvment on the old set up. Got the handbrake at FWD Motors in Melbourne. 9318-0356. Have not posted any pictures, as they are the same as already posted here.

Well worth the time and effort.

I'd be interested to know what (if any) legal/compliance implications this has. Despite being a real improvement... I can see someone in the roads department getting antsy about changing the handbrake around..

    defender handbrake modification.

I can't see how there would be any problem, as I have not altered the cable, and am using a leagal handbrake assembly. All I have done is moved it from the side to the top of the box. No alteration has been done, other than put 3 holes in the seat box, and filled three other holes.

    Only time will tell.

Believe me... I do like the mod. It wouldn't be too hard to revert to standard too if you ever felt the need to.

    Hey Ken,
How is the handbrake mod going?

Anything good or bad to report now that it has been in for a while?

Does the relocated handle hit you in the thigh or anything like that?

I have fantasised about shifting the seat across a little towards the centre of the car to get my shoulder off the B pillar when the window is up and to help keep my back a bit less twisted.

It is hard to tell from those photos whether the handbrake mod would make it completly impossible to shift the seat across a little.

    Whaddyareckon?

    Cheers,
    Cameron

    Re handbrake mod.

    Cameron,

It is the best thing that I have done to my Defender. It took me a more than a week to stop bending over to pull up the handle. It is great to not have any burises on my left calf any more. The handle position does not interfere with me in any way. Off road it is fantastic, as I have more control over the hadbrake while starting off while parked. I would reccommend the modification to anyone with a Defender.
As for moving the seat over with the brake there, you would probably have to make the center console narrower. It takes up most of the space between the seat, and console. There seems to be plenty of room under the seat box to move it, but the fitting was done by brail, as the transfer case is in this area.
