G'day Gav,
Have you swapped the brake shoes? Also check the shoes for alignment and size in drum.
Just a thought.
Chris
So, a rundown of what I have - I am talking about Alko electric brakes here - thought I'd get a bit more of the brains trust here thinking about this here rather than post in the thread I have running about the van these are on.
So, whole story - the brakes are 10" Alko electric. Installed new on an old axle - I had to weld on new mounting plates as the axle is off an old van and the new brakes weren't a bolt on. They worked fine and first trip after not too far I checked them and one side - the LHS was getting hot. Not smoking hot, just a bit too hot to touch on the drum. Checked the adjustment - backed it off a bit, went a bit further - still hot - again, no smoke or anything, just hotter than I was comfortable with. At this stage as I had to drive several hundred KM, I just pulled the brakes off on the side of the road and continued on. Have been using the van like this for some time, but thought I better have a go at fixing it.
Pulled the axle out for ease of working on it and it is now on the bench - checked the brackets I'd welded on - maybe the LHS one was just out of square. So I ground it off, squared it again (much easier on the bench) and rewelded it - all square now. So I put it all back together, and there is still a slight tight spot on one part when I spin it - I wound the adjuster right in until everything was tight to centre everything, then backed it off again - still the same - backed the adjuster right off - still has a tight spot.
So, I thought it may be the drum assembly - the hub/wheel bearings/drum are all one piece for those not familiar - I swapped right to left and vice versa to see if there was a warp or runout in the drum. Nope, the old LHS drum that grabbed on the LHS runs sweet on the RHS and the RHS drum that ran fine on the RHS now grabs same as the other drum.
It must be something inside, but I've pulled it all apart, checked everything against the other side, reassembled it and it is the same.
It's doing my head in so I've packed up for the night. Before I run out and buy a new backing plate and internals, does anyone have any ideas as to what I may be missing here? There's nothing hard about these things, they are a simple robust design that's been around for years. I'm sure I'm missing something simple here....
All thoughts appreciated.
TIA - Gav.

Thanks - no, haven't swapped the shoes - bit of a ***** to do the bottom spring, but yeah, will give that a go in the morning. Will help narrow it down. And no - haven't checked the drums in the shoes - assumed (rightly or wrongly) that these would be matched as it was a complete set - good thought.

Were the drums & shoes checked for matching ovality (???) with a guage?

I’m still failing to understand why it is binding though - when I radius shoes for a vehicle it’s usually to do with braking efficiency and pedal travel, etc rather than actually making them not bind. While I’ll try the suggestions tomorrow I’m still no wiser to why a shoe will grab like this just in one spot when I would have thought this would have to do with the run out of the drum, which I’ve eliminated.

Gav, one would almost think that the plate that was welded may have warped with weld heat maybe? Seems so odd that swapping the left that was the problem to the right and is now free would cancel out drum or shoes to me anyway and have me checking the mounting hardware and plate.
Yeah, was my first thought but I’ve redone it and have the same issue. The alignment on ‘factory fitted’ axles doesn’t appear to be any better than what I’ve done - even checked with a local fabrication shop that specialise in trailer fab and they’ve said they only need to be close. They had about 20 axle sets on the ground and my welding to be honest is probably better than what they buy mass produced. My measurements and rework today shows I’m pretty much spot on - as close as I am on the side that runs fine. I’m comfortable with fabrication, welding and the stresses these cause so I back myself to have this part correct - the plates are thick, we’re laser cut so an exact fit over the axles - just needed to be square and welded on. Not saying you’re wrong mind you, but I’m struggling to see where I went wrong here today - when I first did then while on the van, yes but on the bench with the gear I have not so much but something sure is, so not counting this out - Thanks. 👍

I think, if I understand the situation, that there is a lot of barking up wrong trees.
If the brake is binding in only one spot during rotation of the wheel, the only possible cause is that the braking surface of the drum is not concentric with the axis of rotation.
This can have several possible causes. Working out from the centre:-
1. Bearing issues - worn, or not sitting square in the hub, possibly due to dirt or a bit of metal on the seat, or faulty manufacture of the hub.
2. Mounting surface for the drum is worn, damaged, got dirt or rust on it, or poor manufacture of the hub.
3. (most likely) Mounting surface on the drum is damaged, oversize, rusty, or not concentric with braking surface.
4. Drum is warped, cracked, or otherwise damaged.
I had to replace a new drum on my County, because the mounting circle was not concentric with the braking surface.
Any alignment issues with the shoes, backing plate etc will result in lost motion and poor braking, but cannot result in binding at one point in the wheel rotation.
