    Auto Trans Fluid Temps

There have been many posts on ATF operating temps, but I have a slightly different query.

On my D2 TD5 with 4HP 22 auto I have had fitted a small rear extension to the auto sump, and my temp probe is inserted horizontally from the rear into this - main reason being for probe and wiring protection for off road.

I also have an excellent replacement front trans cooler supplied and fitted by Auto Trans R Us in Balcatta.

Ashtrans advises that 77-93C is the normal operating temp range and 66C as the minimum recommended.

Query for Comments/Responses - It has been suggested by some that the location of my probe will provide a lower temp reading than would normally be expected, and this thought is consistent with the readings that I get (rarely above 60C for normal city/highway driving and highest recently 66C towing the 3T brick uphill).

I'm still unsure if this lower end of the range is due to the cooler, the probe location, or a combination of both. I have purchased a Derale ATF thermostat but am a little reluctant to install it if it will mean making the oil a little too warm as the oil is restricted from the cooler until about 180F/70C.

My trans has now done 274K so is at the outer range of normal life expectancy.

    Cheers

You would have to ASSUME the fluid to be all the same temp.. otherwise the more important job would be to change the location of the pickup....

Hence the query - I didn't know it at the time, but Ashtrans says OIL TEMPERATURE MEASURED AT CONVERTER OUTLET TO COOLER - This is the recommended place to install a temperature gauge or sensor

So, will be interesting to see if anyone here has relevant experience/knowledge to pass on.

There was a thread about this recently.
AFAIR there is a spare port on the RH side near the outlet for the cooler and this can be used.

    regards Philip A
