    Restoring Series Leaf springs?

    G'day all,

At what point do you decide that a set of springs is beyond it and not worth keeping? I've still got my old springs on the 2a and I'm wondering whether I should temporarily pull them off, seperate them, bash the crap out of them with a lump hammer to get the rust off and then sand, repaint and assemble again with appropriate lubrication and new bushes ofcourse. Now the front springs look pretty rusty but they are pretty bloody thick and I wonder whether they might be salvagable? If I can save a bit of dough on the restoration in the short term then this might well be the way to go. As an aside an old BSLRAS member - Ben or 68Landy did some incredible engineering with standard leafs and got superior articulation to Parabolics using Army shackles and shocks.

    Here's said friends LEAF SPRUNG --- > 8O 8)

    Springs

Your springs leafs should be considered a throwaway when-
    1/. They are broken.
2/. they have grooves in them so bad that the lower spring will not slide evenly.
3/. If the main spring eye is elongated or worn too enevenly.
You simply replace broken/ worn leafs.
Sagging is remedied by a visit to a springworks joint that will re- temper and then reset them to what you ask.
Basically, you can get incredible usage out of them.

A while back there was a good Series page on leaf springs by TeriAnn Wakeman. Her site seems to be down, but I found a cached copy on Google.

    http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:n_c5cu...cd=1&client=ie6

If the link doesn't work, Google - teriann suspension and click on cache at the bottom of the entry.

    Cheers
    Simon

Bens still kicking around. He's very active on Outerlimits and Pirate. He made a huge tread about this topic with all info on his mods on OL.

Mine work pretty well, but im going coils so doesnt really matter anymore.
If anyone wants the springs let me know.

    Dave.

    Hey Dave,

My old thread discussing all this with Ben is still over at Outer Limits actually, essentially where I was asking him about the mods he'd done. I haven't seen or heard from Mr Mullins for a loooong time ... would be great to get in touch again. I might well be interested in your springs mate, how old are they and are they for a shorty or a 109? Did you do the mods Ben had done with yours and what are the specs - are you giving them away or what? I just need some donor springs I think.

    Best, Simon.

I'll have to check tomorrow leaf counsts and thicknesses.

Big thing with series rovers is that they suffer from axle tramp (wrap) in the front. I've got a track rod going to the front bar to the axle to help prevent this.
Makes a big difference in climbing ability as you're getting more 'positive' down force helping track force.

I'll try ramping it at a mates house and get some pics.

    Hey Dave,

Sounds good mate ... I'd apreciate any info - again, are they from a 109 or an 88 and are you throwing them or what?

    They are all 109.

If no one wants them, they will be going to the scrap metal recyclers for $$$.

Postage would be a killer though.

RE Postage ... your probably right mate, I'll probably need to look closer afield; thanks anyway. I have another set of shot springs that I want to take to the scrap yard - wonder how much they pay for that sort of thing?
