with a SS mesh, you will lose some filtration of the oil mist.... that it's supposed to prevent from entering into the intake system.
The cotton filter separates finer/smaller droplets of oil.
Hi all has any one put a stainless steel mesh filter in their provent as this seems a cheaper way to go as it can be removed and cleaned thanks all.

Read this before you go for the stainless version.

Hmm, tested by Curtin University. I wonder if that was Ben (isuzurover on here) who did the testing? Ben provided a number of us on AULRO with Provents a few years back to do some real world testing for him.

I removed the filter media and filled the cartridge with course steel wool (pot scourers).
Two filters in 12000kms is a little excessive is my reasoning.
When the second filter became saturated the top hose, inlet had popped off the provent.
Not sure if the steel wool is working as I have not checked the inside of the top ic hose since.
3000kms since mod, so I probably should have a look.

Cost difference between Britpart and Genuine seals: £2.04. Knowing that your brakes won't fail at any moment: Priceless.
That is why I replaced with a ss mesh filter, but after talking with Ben on the Aulro FB page will likely be going back to stock MH filter. maybe keep the mesh one for emergencies. Part of the issue I had was initially cost of the filters and getting genuine. At up to $90 per filter and as you said having to replace 2 in 12000kms does concern me a little.

Re. Stainless steel pot scourers.
I just checked my top intercooler hoses and there was a little oil in it.
Not much, but it was sticky not wet.
Cleaned the hose and will report back.
Currently at 264450 kms.

Hi Guys,
I have a provent 200 on my rover V8 (not a diesel but it still works :P) and I was surprised to see $90 for a filter so I looked them up down here and whadayaknow, 50 euros for a filter... Anyway, my supplier had a list with alternatives which might be worth a look at? I have not tested any of these so ymmv but perhaps there is something a bit cheaper in there.
Cheers,
-P
