    Discovery 3 Driving Lights

Have just purchased our first Landrover - a TDV6 HSE - absolutely lovely and a step above anything else we were looking at.
Only disappointment we have had is with the driving lamp kit dealer-fitted. Lamps initially very floppsy, which has been rectified. However, driving lights are only 55 watt globes, which LR Customer Assistance insist are only designed to "enhance" the coverage of the "fantastic" Xenon headlights - which is all they do. (And the Xenon lights ARE good!

Has anyone had experience with fitting Driving lamps with at least 100 - 130 Watt globes, to provide additional depth of penetration for night time country driving. LR Customer Assistance can offer no advice, except to say that 55 watt units is all the computerised lighting system will support.

When asked to look at the G4 Challenge Vehicles as shown on the Adventure part of their Web Site, equipped with a multitude of spot lights, they advised quote "Regrettably, we are unable to provide you with information on how to modify your Discovery 3. The equipment fitted to the Land Rover G4 Challenge vehicles is not necessarily transferable to production vehicles." unquote.

However, I understand that this is not the case.

Can anyone advise how to do this without fusing the electonics?

    Welcom to AULRO!

I've fitted IPF extremes to mine and they work will.

ARB just tapped into the headlight loom somewhere. The restriction is apparently only if you use the built-in LR connection.

I've had no problems so far and the light from the IPF's is quite good. I got them both as spots as the xenon goves an excellent spread already.

    Hi Bandasooka and welcome aboard.

Do you know what type of globes are used in the LR driving lights.

Depending on what type they are, you might be able to change the globes to Phillips Crystal Vision.

These are a 55w current rated globe but the put out the equivalent of 110 watts of light.

I have as yet not fitted driving lights to my D3 but I run up to 6 driving lights on my RR and they are all the Crystal Vision 55 watters, including the low and high beam on the RR. Excellent WHITE light.

My to permanent driving lights are IPFs and I originally ran standard 130w globes but the Crystal Vision globes give a much better and whiter light.

Click on the link below and it will take you to some pictures I took on a resent Landy trip to Fraser Island. There are two pictures taken at night using the RR’s light and you will see what I mean by WHITE light.

    Cheers.

Thanks Drivesafe, for the info. We lived in Gympie for 3+ years, and know Fraser Island quite well - unfortunately didn't have a vehicle to appreciate it fully at that sage (and only saw the wreck in daylight!).

The Philips Crystal Vision sound like they will be worth a try. The LR Units are just standard 55W halogen lamps. Will look locally to see where i can get some - or perhaps you could head me in the right direction?

I still find it very frustrating that the Discovery 3 is obviously capable of running extra lamps as evidenced in the G4 photos, yet LR in Australia show no interest in finding out how!

    Regards,

Thanks Jamo for your info. Have looked under the bonnet and find it difficult to see the engine! Any idea on where ARB sourced the power for their relay?. Now that I have the LR Units fitted, the switching side should be straightforward, but I still need an alternate power source other than that currently wired (assuming, of course, that LR Australia are correct in their assumptions re maximum wattage the computer linked relay can manage).

Will try Drivesafe's suggestion re the Philips Crystal Vision Lamps first - hoping they provide us the additional penetration we are seeking.

    Thanking you for your assistance,

Hi again Bandasooka, it pays to shop around as the price for the Philips globes can vary greatly. The last time I bought the globes, I got the best price at Burson Auto Parts. They are a chain store like Repco or Supercheap.

I Don’t know if they are up your way.

You will have to find out exactly what type of globe you have fitted EG H4, H7 or what ever before you go looking at prices.

    Cheers.

    Bandasooka,

Like Jamo I have the IPF 900XS fitted to my D3. Both of mine are spots and give great depth which is what I wanted as the Xenons give great spread. They are 65W H9 bulbs which are equivalent to 100W halogen.

ARB use the standard wire loom in the IPF kit and every wire, switch, relay, fuse is in that kit. The loom taps into the high beam wire near the light and take power off the battery. Instructions are very clear on how to wire up.

So failing the bulb replacement get a set of IPF 900XS lights and if your lucky they will fit where the LR ones are.

By the way ARB have Easter specials on these lights for $350 a pair (down from $399).

    Chris
