    1998-2001 range rover offroad

i'm assuming from my research that the range rovers around the 2000 model don't have a centre diff lock, rather a viscous coupling and traction control.

now is this any good? or should i just stick with a discovery if i want to go offroad?

The Viscous centre diff in those are quite good. They are no worse off road than the Locking CD. (From What Ive Heard)

Id even consider retrofitting a Viscous Transfer case to an old one for an experiment.

As for Traction Control...Im not a fan of it, due to the kind of off road stuff I do (mud and lose stuff). It saps too much power to do what I want..its too intrusive (I have experienced it in a Discovery II Td5). If it had a lockable rear diff and disengagable Traction Control on the front axle only it would be heaps better.

Geez, you will start it all over again.
My 92 Range Rover with viscous coupling will go as far as one with a locking centre diff.

The viscous coupling only allows a small difference in speed between front and rear axle, just enough to turn corners. Otherwise it is effectively locked, and if the speed difference gets too great it locks solid.
When they fail they lock solid and you break diffs/ axles etc if you do not fix it.

I have a 1999 XA model, I believe Land Rover introduced Traction Control on all 4 wheels with this upgraded model with BMW involvement. Personnaly I am more than happy with the Viscous coupling and have seen the difference it makes between the Range Rover and standard Disco II relying on just 4 wheel Traction Control.
Traction control is great for a standard offering, with no buttons or leavers to remember to operate but I would prefer a rear locker anyday, previously had a 85 Hiline with a rear Maxidrive fitted. It provided more control and could just crawl over most obstacles and put down large amounts of power without loosing traction. Steering around obstacles with the real locker in was a little difficult at times.
Traction Control is a different beast and on sand it can work against your progress as the harder you accelerate the more it clatters, slowing you up and you have to back off till any wheel spin stops.

Maybe I just haven't got the nack yet!

    Cheers
    GR
