    Resetting the ECU

    I have a dash lit up like a christmas tree...AGAIN! This is my second off road jaunt in a couple of months and the second time the ABS, Traction Control and Downhill Descend warning lights permanently on. Last time my friendly Land Rover mechanic plugged his computer in, hit the reset and all fixed.
    2 things?
    1. I believe the problem is the air gap on the front right hand front wheel sensor. Can the air gap be adjusted?
    2. Is there a way to reset the ECU? I remember seeing a thing about using a paper clip somewhere on this forum.
    I would like to try a few things before I go to the expense of getting a new sensor fitted. (As was recommended last time this happened.) Any ideas on cost?

    You can disconnect the battery and it will reset the ECU....however, I do not believe it will erase all the faults which have been logged (ie: ABS/TC etc ), these need to be reset using the testbook

    I think the rear ABS sensors for a Defender are close to grand 8O If it is a dicky sensor, it may pay to start looking around some wreckers.

    I tried the battery disconnect last time but it didn't work. Don't like the sound of the replacement cost either.

    I have the same problem...have had for about 2 years. All my warning lights are on too. I was told that it was the front left sensor but wouldn't affect braking, etc. For the price of getting it changed I thought bugger it & put the money into new suspension instead. ... & next will be the CDL ... not the sensor.

    Just be careful when rego comes up. When the garage sees the christmas tree on the dash they may knock you back for a faulty ABS. :?

    I have had the same thing a few times, and believe it or not I have just flooded water in and around the brake caliper and rotor area, being extra thorough in behind the rotor(from behind the wheel) . on my girl it is the left rear sensor that seems to fault.

    I discovered that this works for my girl when driving into some deeper crossings on a return trip from Cairns. It was a very wet and slippery trip. The dash lights would come on and I would have no TC (not fun), would have to pussy foot along , when I went thru the first crossing the lights went out and had TC back. This happened a few times on that trip, the last couple I used a bottle of "pump" water and squirted the brakes as above and the TC fault went away .
    The weird thing is that I have had some horrendously wet and dirty trips since then on the same road and the fault has not reoccured :? . The problem now is that I am overly concerned about the fault occuring. I experienced that the TC does perform extremely well at speed in the slippery stuff, I went from a very predictable stable vehicle to a scittery and scary sled ride in an instant. 8O I was quickly reminded just how stubbornly uncontrollable a 2 and bit tonne vehicle can be on the clay :roll: . I was really surprised at just what a differance the TC makes.

    Anyway all that aside, :roll: the water squirt is a cheap and easy thing to try, however much a longshot it is.
