My blown head gasket was caused by a hole in the wastegate actuator. The actuator sits behind the turbo and close to the starter motor. The hole was caused by shorting the starter motor terminals with the actuator can when installed. This resulted in the wastegate not openning and therefore running the engine at extreme turbo boost. If you can hear a hissing sound from behind the turbo it would be worth checking the actuator.
