    Coolant Flush and Heater Problems

    Hey guys,
i did a coolant flush today on my Disco 2 td5, about 6 liter came out, i took the overflow box apart to give it a flush too and then i refilled the system. when it was full, i turned the engine on, so that the water pump sucks more water in the system.
but the water level stayed the same and no water was sucked in. i squeezed the radiator hose for air but nothing happened. we gave it a test ride, at first it seemed to be everything okay, but after turning it on again, the dash jumped to overheating and it glowes red. It probably overheated because of air in the system but i am not quiet sure.
the other thing is that when i turned on the heater on maximum warm, no warm air was coming, no air at all. on the cold setting, i am receiving good cold air, but as soon as i put the Temperatur up, it stops flowing.
i Parked the car, it cooled down and when i opened the coolant box, half-warm fluid was coming out of the box.
Anyone got the same problems, a solution or a link for a solution?
everything is highly appreciated, i am fairly new as a selfmade-mechanic and now cant find a solution.

    cheers marc

If you search the site you should find help on refilling D2 engines, it can be a little involved so read and follow carefully

    Coolant Flush and Heater Problems

    Hi Marc
I’ve been reading your posts re some of the problem you’re having with your D2, please don’t take this the wrong way but may I suggest you find a good Land Rover mechanic and take it to them and have all the problems rectified? Then after you’ve got a good starting point and a running D2 you can start with some basics like oil changes etc.
There’s a wealth of knowledge on this forum and lots of members that offer advice, me included.

Do you have a copy of RAVE for your D2?? This has detailed instructions for mechanical repairs etc, you can get a copy of a CD from the forum shop.

To help you out with the flush refill, the method to fill is as follows
1 - remove the header tank and place above the engine
2 - remove the bleed screw from the top radiator hose
3 - fill header tank with OAT coolant and water mix until it starts running out bleed screw, tighten bleed screw.
5 - replace header tank, get engine up to temp and check level in header tank and top up as required.

    Cheers Lemo

    Header tank and bleed screw

Header tank removed and location for filling

Bleed screw, mine has a low water sensor.
Be careful with removal and when you retighten, can over tighten and strip the plastic thread. You can get a brass one from eBay

use the coke bottle method, works every time.

if you're not getting hot air from the heater (assuming the fan is blowing the air over the core and the vents are set right and its not bypassed) then you dont have the system bled properly and its airlocking in the head.)

What do you mean with the coke bottle method?
I thought that there might be air locked somewhere, but i thought the water pump would get it out. I try it again tomorrow with your procedure and i also bought the RAVE manual finally Thank you so much for your help, this is really the help i need at the moment Coolant Flush and Heater Problems

I’m going to be “that person” that says it’s probably all academic now as there is a better than average chance of engine damage from overheating.

Hope youre right but doubt it from your other post.
Starting new threads on the same issue in the same section likely wont help you get a result.
