Puff of smoke around 300tdi turbo/exhaust only at startup?

    Hoping someone can help...
I was helping my brother-in-law buy a 97 dti disco which was in pretty good nik except that 1. someone had pulled the ABS fuse and 2. that when started, you could see a small puff of smoke being emmitted from under the exhaust manifold near the turbo. You could only see it for a second then it was gone, however it was quite repeatable - every time you started the engine. Any idea's what may cause this? The engine has been fitted with an aftermarket 'DTS' turbo and exhaust manifold.

    thanks in adv,
    Taz.

Sounds like a leaking manifold gasket. Not nesseccarily a big deal but I wouldn't buy a car for sale where they hadn't bothered to fix it ....makes you suspect there is a known much more expensive problem

You would also want to put the ABS fuse back in and make sure there is no problem there

    Thanks guys

I was wondering if the smoke was something to do with the wastegate - maybe it leaks with no boost, ie engine off, then closes closes as the engine starts. As you say it's no biggy anyway.

Re - ABS, the car was at a yard so we signed up on the condition of them fixing it. I dont think they know what they are in for! I only hope they dont try and weasle out of the deal when they realise how much it will cost to fix!

    Cheers,
    Taz.

Could be wrong, but a puff of black smoke (300tdi) from the exhaust on startup seems fairly normal. Mine has done it since new. Also a bit as you take off when cold.
Wonder why it needed an aftermarket turbo? I reckon the one fitted should be good enough? Just filled up after 380km around town,36.5l. (at 144.5c/l.,BH)

Puff of smoke from the exhaust is normal but not from within the engine bay....

    G'day LandyAndy

Yes - I'm sure we will have another punter for our trips. Interesting thing was that I actually didnt try to talk him into a Disco. He had a budget of around 12-14k and wanted an automatic diesel 4wd with good economy and something not too truck like so his misses can drive it. He is planning a trip up to Karratha/Darwin in five weeks. I think he made a good choice! As soon as we get him onto some tracks he will really be hooked
