    Defender TD5 inexpensive mods

Couldn't find how to upload pictures into the gallery here, may be not allowed to? If I can do it, please guys tell me how.

Anyway, have something to share what i've done. Your opinion much appreciated

    1. Air system. Had ARB compressor for year and half, decided to make air tank to get boost. Went to local multi metals workshop, got 850 mm long 7 mm thick piece of proper gaz pipe (tested at 300 psi written on body) for $27.00. Another shooping after air bits and joins - $24.60. ARB compressor has cut point at 90 psi on top and 60 psi bottom. Pumping 4 tyres from 18 psi to 40 psi takes about 5 minutes, might be less. But noticable less that without tank. Mounted under rear sits.

    2. Exhaust replacement pipe. Local Exhaust Specialist workshop for $55.00. No more twitches on low speed high gear, just goes on idle revs. Nose inside the car reduced from 64db to 61db, very noticeably. Sound little bit of bass.

    3. Dash plate. Once again multi metal workshop, 3 mm black steel + several bending for $25. Does job very well.

    4. Cargo area custom made shelf. Made it just before long trip, was found very useful. Old cargo barrier, several cuts, welded metal stripe along, 3 mounting point in front and 2 hooks left and right sides. All bed-clothes, tent etc. kept there. Cost several dollars for bolts and nuts.

Have some ideas to do, keep you informed if you interested. All taken pictures could be found here

    Welcome RS652,

Your photos can be hosted in the members gallery here (look for in the modules section on the left hand side of the screen).

If you have difficulty with that I can create an album for you. You can email them to me at eno_atoi@yahoo.com.au and we can take it from there.

Also read the FAQ section and the "sticky" in the general chat section in the Forums.

    We await the photos

    Defender Mods.

I like the straight through exhaust. It is on the list for me to do. I also lile the shelf. Was trying to figure out where to store my freedom tent while driving. It's about a meter square, and 200mm high. Looks like an ideal spot to store it, and still fit in the 2 Golden Retrievers.
One mod I have done is the Range Rover Handbrake fitted to my Defender. It is the best thing that I have done to the viechicle. It took a couple of weeks to stop bending over to pull up the handbrake. It also makes it safer off road, as the hand brake can be used more often, and safely.

    Keep up the great ideas!

    Gday Ruslan

I'm very curious about the straight through exhaust... you said "no more twitches on low speed high gear, just goes on idle revs"... are you getting a much smoother transition from take-off into first then into second? I know alot of guys on the forum have talked about how easily the td5 stalls when taking off from standstill... mine all too much, it always feels like I'm overrevving it.... does this get rid of the problem?

BTW The other photos and ideas are great!

    Hi Ruslan
    I like that straight thru pipe 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
I think I will add that to the must do list for BlackBetty.
I think that with a reduction in back pressure you are getting the turbo to spool up quicker, much needed in the TD5.
    Well done.

    Hi Phil,
I have done it here in Mount Gambier in local Exhaust Specialist workshop. I think you can find this kind workshops in your place too.
Unbolted muffle I keep in my shed, all as it was. If I decide one day to put it back just need to unbolt replacement pipe, 15 minutes job. Front 2 points flange from Commodore, just need to drill bigger holes (11.5 mm). Rear 3 points flange I made myself.

Yes Scott, straight pipe helps to get rid this issue. On my Landy it does. 3'd gear ~700 rpm (idle) rides 20 km/h without touching an accelerator. Most roundabouts do on fourth gear, really!

Also I have unplugged wire from the clutch master cylinder and blank EGR pipe. Try, you'll be supprised

You are right Andrew, back pressure definitely reduced now. And noise too! My wife couldn't notice it, she expected sport style sound and said "you spent money for nothing". She doesn't drive my track and can't feel perfomance 8)

Tell me more about the wire to the clutch master cylinder! Does it link back to the ECU to help (or not) with takeoffs?

Also - where did you get the blanking plate for the EGR pipe done (or how did you do it). I've seen adverts from the UK advertising blanking kits, but never seen any here in Aust. How much difference did it make?

    Thanks
    David
